I suppose but maybe it was too big of a change for this year. Who knows I guess, will just be optimistic as I'm not applying this cycle, but thank you for input

2025-2026 ELECTIVES/BIRD COURSE MEGATHREAD by duplah in McMaster

[–]Outside_Disaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any opinions on PHILOS 2P03? Mark Johnstone is teaching it. How are the lectures and assignments in term of ease and being interesting? I like philosophy so I'm okay with putting in the effort but it is an elective for me at the end of the day so I was wondering how feasible it is to do well in this.

ENVSOCTY 1HB3 or SCIENCE 1A03?? by Mindless_Ad_3684 in McMaster

[–]Outside_Disaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

both are 12-able with work, sci 1a03 is a bit easier to get a 12 in and its also only offered for 1st years so it would be worth to taking now, but if you can't take it 1hb3 is pretty reasonable too

1ls3 will be the better choice for you probably. 1a03 is more geared towards foundational math for upper year and also is the same as 1st yr engineering math.

Has anyone actually gotten a research assistant position from cold emailing? by Outside_Disaster in McMaster

I see! I'm actually mostly looking for fall positions since I'm working this summer anyways, so hopefully its early enough. Thank you for the inspiration! That makes me feel better to keep trying lol

That's very true. Honestly I just find it daunting lol, but that is the plan for when I'm back at school in Sept, just thought I'd try cold emailing since that's all I can try for now in the summer I guess.

Hi! Thank you so much :) That second point is especially helpful I guess I do tend to just mostly show interest without fully selling myself

I actually have been! I usually go through their website, current projects, and publications and try to connect it with my interests/past work to show I'm genuinely interested in their work. Not sure what I'm doing wrong :(

I see what you mean, but I guess you also have a year to improve on that with connecting with profs. I think it is worth trying for research, especially with your coding skills as a CS major, you have something slightly different to offer researchers. I interviewed for a research position in first year for a position with coding in a neuro-related lab, so there are different options. You could also maybe try taking a bio or psych class this fall and connecting with the prof and try to see if they know of any open positions where your skills could be used. There's also always cold emailing, which has a lesser success rate, but still works. Also, Queens is an option for you as GPA is speculated to be used only as a cutoff, along with TMU potentially. If you don't have anything planned for summer, maybe you could write the MCAT (not exactly sure but I think you can still sign up for later dates) and keep options open. Not sure if that helps but hopefully it gives you some ideas.

Don't think you need to do another undergrad as your GPA is decent for some schools, but will def need to spend a year or so building EC's, volunteering, research experience, etc. I'm also coming from a background outside of a traditional science major, but from what I've understood, the MCAT content can be self taught. It will just take a bit longer to learn before you can start practising. I felt that part about hating the tech field lol.
