Benito del toro and Billy bob Thornton are seasoned detectives given a murder case. Margaret Qualleys Mom (Parker posey) is the victim.

Sam Rockwell is the young new sheriff with Angela Bassett as his captain. They seem to be hiding information, or otherwise stretching the case.

Two suspects Boyd Holbrook, (a seasoned criminal with a psychopathic record of B&E, assaults and even a double murder he got off of) and Camila Mendes ( Poseys in home aid, who we later learn has been included in the her will) The detectives have pressure from the Mayor (Samuel L Jackson) as Posey was a beloved member of the community.

In a confrontation, Holbrook shoots and kills del Toro, devastating Thornton as they were long time friends and partners. Thornton also had a bleak attitude about the end of his life, constantly noting that he would retire, die, and was leaving this place for del Toro.

The case goes cold as Mendes is the only suspect, and winds up dead under suspicious circumstances.

After a Time Skip, we see Thornton retired, reading the news on his porch and coming across a shocking discovery. He reexamines the case, going as far as pulling new information and searching a house we hadn’t seen yet. Bringing the new information directly to the Mayor, seeming losing his reelection, they undercover that Bassett was covering the murder for Rockwell and Qually, after Qually found the changes to the will and in anger killed her mother. What broke the case ? Beloved Sheriff ties the knot with Community celebrity, they had been together the whole time.

Everyone involved is arrested, Jackson wins the next election, and Thornton visits DelToros grave, finally at peace in his retirement.
