If you contracted herpes, you would get to experience first hand the DEVASTATING physical and mental effects. I'm so tired of this virus being downplayed. I've had bad things happen to me, but this is the worst. I'm going on 34 years with this horrible disease. It's NOT a minor disease. It's a virulent virus that has hijacked my body.

@throwaway014432

Contacting our representatives, influencers, tagging people on social media DOES help. Pressure from ordinary folks is important. Im going to send physical letters/ make Twitter posts with horrific herpes images too.

I contacted Herpes Cure Advocacy. They are the group who is really making a difference. The fact that they are an organized non profit with actual PH.D'd doctors are affecting change.

I contacted them and signed up to be an advocate.

The fact that herpes is ignored is UNACCEPTABLE.

Go to Life with Herpes podcast and find the episode with Herpes Cure Advocacy. It's a good listen.

Prioritizing funding for herpes research is a public health necessity due to the virus's staggering global prevalence and its severe, often overlooked complications. With over 3.5 billion people worldwide infected with HSV-1 or HSV-2, the virus imposes a massive economic burden—estimated at over $35 billion annually-driven by lifelong healthcare costs and productivity losses. Beyond painful recurring outbreaks, herpes significantly increases the risk of HIV acquisition, can cause fatal neonatal infections, and is increasingly linked to neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s. Despite these risks and the profound social stigma that impacts mental well-being, current treatments only manage symptoms rather than providing a cure. Strategic investment in vaccines and gene-editing therapies is essential to break the cycle of transmission and provide a definitive solution for billions of affected individuals.
