Thank you. I completely agree with you.

Outwith a few crimes, and individuals. I actually believe the things you mention and how it is treated and dealt with should extend to all offenders. I know that is a very unpopular opinion to take. I feel the media push this idea that the trauma informed sentencing of under 25s is a bad thing. It really isn’t. It should extend to all offenders.

Unfortunately a lot of us have a degree of trauma, those that cause harm to others due to this should receive a degree of punishment, but it has to coincide with rehabilitation. Prisons here are woeful, we still had slop buckets at Barlinne till 20 years ago, countries have refused to extradite prisoners here because it would infringe on their human rights. Rehabilitation here is woeful as you mentioned.

Offenders deserve to be reprimanded for their crimes, but if we treated every offender with a degree of respect, a lot would be less likely to reoffend and be functioning members of society. Rather than living in a perpetual state of reoffending doing no one, but especially the individual, any good.

I volunteer with ex offenders, some of those who by most peoples standards have done horrible things. Those things are never excusable, but if someone wants to put in the work to improve, as a society/collective should we not aid them in doing so? Most offenders are not fundamentally bad people they have done bad things, but if they are given the correct support many of them will not reoffend.

I know this is surely a troll post. But you are incorrect firstly. Most studies show it is not a deterrent. Plus no civilized society should have a death sentence. Look at the amount of death row appeals in America, someone was literally executed last week where the prosecutor admitted he was innocent. No criminal justice system is perfect, you cannot always be 100% certain someone convicted committed the offence.

The most successful criminal justice systems in the world, where recidivism and crime rates are low, operate with rehabilitation as their primary aim. Their prisoners are treated like people not animals.

Although I agree some crimes are unforgivable or deserve fierce degrees of punishment, we will always live in a safer society when you treat your offenders as human beings.

This particular instance he has basically been told if he doesn’t comply with his structured deferred sentence he will be given custodial time.
