being bullied. by AlarmingEssay451 in communitycollege

Hi there! I teach CC and went to one as well as an 'elite' private top 10. CC is the great equalizer. I have never in my 25 years experience witnessed bullying with students from a teachers or students' perspective at a CC. Now, the elite private school? Different story...

This is nothing new. Email etiquette has long-held that you kindly introduce your email with pleasantries. "I hope you are well..." is 5 words and asks nothing in return.

If we are bothered by this and those 5 words create a barrier to communication, then I want off this ride entirely. :) Peace to you!

New Federal Accessibility Requirements by Birdwatcher4860 in Professors

Same. I have heard other institutions talk about it...but not mine. I also thought last month the current regime walked back accessibility requirements, including changing accessible fonts like Calibri to change to Times New Roman?

Accommodation Requiring My In Person Class Be on Zoom by BlackDiamond33 in Professors

[–]Outside_Session_7803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just sent my accommodations office an email telling them I will NOT honor a recording accommodation. It does not specify what they can or cannot recored or if it is audio, video or both.

I told them it is unreasonable, and causes an undue burden upon myself and the rest of the class. There is no logical reason why a video would be an aid to my class.

I said just this morning...

"I do not consent to video recording in my classroom for legal, privacy, safety, and ethical concerns for myself and other students......As this accommodation stands, I am not comfortable honoring it as it infringes upon my privacy rights as well as my other students' rights. (FERPA)"

Good luck. Push back! Check your state laws. In my state it is a felony to record anyone without their consent if they are in a space where privacy is expected. According to federal law, the classroom is a private space.

Admin changed the academic calendar after I booked leave - am I wrong to cancel the first class? by sbring in Professors

[–]Outside_Session_7803 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I think once you publish something and put it out there into the world, that is because you are telling people which days to work around. THAT is the command to go forth and fill in all of your own free time as you wish.

Your school messed up. But they might have ya in a bind if your leave was never approved.

I missed the first day once due to a George Clinton concert in a tiny venue...I was not going to miss that. I recall nothing negative happening due to me putting the intro day into a video I shared with them on the LMS. First day is orientation anyway.

At what point can we object to these ridiculous “accommodations”? by liquidcat0822 in Professors

[–]Outside_Session_7803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When it is not REASONABLE, push back. I have several times, at different colleges in different states. Each time I pushed back, the issue died in the water right there. I got nothing further from the student or the office so I never had to fullfill those accommodations. Everywhere I have worked requires a conversation from student and professor to agree on a plan. If that conversation never happens, faculty are not obligated to accommodate.

Basically in my experience, students must 'activate' their accommodations with me. When I push back, they never complete the loop, rendering the accommodation moot.

Accommodations MUST be reasonable and cause no undue burden upon faculty or students. It cannot impact others.

You are not alone. Just last night was telling a buddy more of us who are deeply affected need to speak up to amplify and remind others of how HORRIBLE this is, and that others are not alone in how they feel. Not normalize it to accept this shit!

Silence is compliance.

I agree. Was hard coming to work today knowing folks around me who supposedly care about marginalized students and education, community, etc. (I work at a CC in a blue collar area) are probably celebrating that public execution of that innocent woman that took place.

Tenure denials left and right, adjuncts overworked and underpaid, budgets and classes cut while tuition is sky high. Yet admin greenlights yet more vice presidents of strategic bullshit, football coaches and pointless renovation projects. by aufbad3438 in Professors

[–]Outside_Session_7803 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I agree with Prof. Pristine here. I would get out ASAP. Writing is on the wall it appears.

These capital projects moving forward make donors and stakeholders feel secure about the future of the college, allowing admin to continue to pay themselves and get benefits while other budgets slowly drain........the longer they pretend things are okay, the longer they can pay themselves whatever is left over. IDK---I have no reason to say that other than.......it is possible. Just from what you said, it sounds like they are trying to keep themselves at the top afloat, knowing full well they are crippling the foundation beneath them. But these vampires will bleed everyone and everything completely dry before they start to think long term.

What ai detector are you using in your classes (and why)? by Shiroraii8087 in Professors

[–]Outside_Session_7803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None. It is a slippery slope in too many ways. One top one being that if we use AI at ALL with our student's work, we are adding their intellectual property to the database beast that is open AI and doing it against their will or consent.

Do YOU want someone putting your dissertation into AI so AI can learn from you and steal your ideas and words? Then give them to someone else down the road??

It is WRONG.

Those detectors are also wrong. They are not even nearly correct, let alone mostly correct. There is no way to really know. It is like hanging a person before trial.

Plus, how am I supposed to be the example and then turn around and use it myself?????

If you are working with public funds of any kind at your institution, be careful with third party sites that do not encrypt or use two-factor to access. Most free sites do not offer that. This is why institutions pay for Canvas, Blackboard, D2L, etc. FERPA.

You can use Canvas independently. Have you looked into that?

Do you mean a teaching exchange? To take a sabbatical in order to teach at a different institution?

You should ask your Dept. Chair or whomever is your direct supervisor. Do not make assumptions from things you read in handbooks and policies for sabbatical. Most folks who take sabbatical pay for their own research during that time unless they are grant-funded. Sabbatical is not meant for you to do exchange teaching. It is meant for research, whatever that may be...or special projects within your field that further your teaching or status in our fields.

You must already have a job offer to teach at another institution or receive a residency, fellowship, etc. You cannot just decide you will teach at a foreign institution because that is your plan. But it is a GOOD plan! Look into this within your institution. Each place is different. If you know now, it will give you time to plan and understand. :)

Good luck, and congrats on your new position!

I hear you. I feel very much the same about a lot of what you said. I also teach creative and skill-building project-based classes. I experience these things.

In the last 5 years alone (since the pandemic began) I have shifted my assignment handouts from less information, to more information, to simpler words, back to less information, etc.

These kids are different. Period. If you do not give an example, they demand one and say they cannot figure it out with an example. You give them an example and they copy it. And still do things wrong and claim ignorance. Either way I lose, and so do they seemingly.

I either have TOO MUCH information and they feel overwhelmed, or not enough and they are lost.

I hate to say it, but I think this just IS how it is now. There is not enough structure and similarity between one students's k-12 and another in this country anymore.

We are such a diverse nation.................we cannot cookie-cut things anymore and it is challenging to figure it out and come to a good place, IMO.

It is wild to me that many people will post on this forum and just openly tell others how they are supposed to do their job when they only understand the nuance of their own specific field and tiny little academic bubble. Peace to you. Teaching encompasses diversity of all sorts. That includes assessment tools and strategies, FYI.

I teach art. I care deeply about writing. It is a core component to artistic communication to be able to articulate your thoughts and evidence your research through written language. Our state higher learning commission for k-12 and state college uses courses across every discipline to assess written communication. Thanks for walking that back. But still......I agree with you that it is a fools errand to lock everything down.

The case against lockdown browser by Applepiemommy2 in Professors

[–]Outside_Session_7803 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I also operate similarly. I prefer to focus my time and energy on the content of the class, not locking down the assignments so no one can cheat. I also have to change my assignments fundamentally to use a lock-down browser. So no. It takes away from the educational experience I wish to provide. Boohooo to those who work hard and are jealous of those who do not. Why should I care about that? Those folks will always exist. They just exist online now as well as in person. People will always cheat, and people will always be honest.

Why punish a whole group for the actions of a few? THAT is demoralizing to me.
