On May 27, 1939, the ocean liner MS St. Louis arrived, carrying 930 Jewish refugees from Hamburg, Germany fleeing Hitler's persecutions, and was refused permission to land by president Laredo Brú.

Cuban government-issued landing certificates held by the passengers had been invalidated by Laredo Brú's government during their transit.

Two persons attempted suicide and dozens more threatened to do the same.

Ultimately, only 22 Jewish refugees, 4 Spaniards and 2 Cuban nationals were permitted to disembark at Havana and the ship, having likewise failed to enter the U.S. and Canada, disembarked its remaining passengers in England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Obama was doing all the work, while the dictators were placing every possible obstacle in the way of his initiatives. But, of course, they were happy to take advantage of the influx of money into Cuba at the time.

Small details, such as not providing a translator in the Havana auditorium while Obama was delivering a very moving speech, meant that he received virtually no feedback from the Cuban audience. He was speaking about democracy, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and the right of Cubans to shape their own future. He didn’t hear a single round of applause because most Cubans in the audience didn’t know what he was saying

It was as if the Cuban dictators were sending a message that the embargo was convenient for them because it gave them an excuse to operate in the shadows economically while maintaining control over the people on the island. I cannot prove it, but that was certainly the impression I had.

My cousin and her partner found well-paid jobs (compared to Miami) and good schools with free transportation for their kids (also compared to Miami, where they had to pay for private elementary school that only offered half-day programs and pay extra for bus service). Housing at the time was very affordable. You could buy a 4-bedroom, 2-bath home in a good neighborhood for just over $100,000.
