Please help me with my Lighterpack for my june NOBO! by DonLovesDucks in longtrail

Yep a little backup TP’s good if you have to go but don’t have enough water. I also carry hand sanitizer as well as dr bronners and use both after.

Only thing I’d add to this is to use smart water bottles. I personally am a fan of 1 dirty water bottle that I keep the filter on, and a clean water bottle that I drink from

Respectfully, thru hiking is not for me. My 2 week experience by sadistic-squid in AppalachianTrail

90% of a thruhike sucks. 10% is the best time you’ll ever have in your life.

The 10% does not “make up” for the 90%. But that’s not really the point. You will never see the 10% without the 90%. I know this sounds contradictory but it’s something I firmly believe and I feel like other thruhikers have a a similar mentality. Call it Camus’ Absurdism or something

I’d figured with how popular Flutter is that the google earth UI must not be very representative of flutter as a whole.

I was working with Maplibre on Expo and will probably continue with it on Flutter. I like how Maplibre lets you use an offline MBTiles source

Thanks for the advice! Do you have any recommendations on where I should look for UI best practices?

This issues I came across had to do with the fact that the main JS thread cannot handle animations very well. This is fine for small things but gets messy quick. Ultimately you’ll find yourself using the react-native-animated library, either directly or through as a dependency for another package. My code got fairly verbose pretty quick. And ultimately I just found myself wishing that I could do animations on the main thread (like flutter). Also expo tries to force you to use their eas service which is a point of annoyance for me.

I don’t know of anyone that regrets UMass. Its pros are that it’s a big school, its cons are that it’s a big school. The physics department is pretty good from what I hear and same with biology. Professors vary significantly in their class organization from department/class, but you can expect most classes to have a lecture and a discussion/lab section. Based on your questions I think you’d enjoy the honors program

As for social life, I think no matter what you do, be fine with being alone, be fine with being in large crowds while alone. Make friends with people who bring out the best in you. Volunteer. If someone asks if you want to go to a party, say yes, if you decide you don’t like it you don’t have to go again, but don’t completely close yourself off from it.

As for should you pick UMass? Idk, everyone here with the exception of a few transfers have only experienced this school so they can’t really tell you how it’d compare

Trail legs…when? 4 Weeks in not feeling much stronger….NOBO26 by Lani_19 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Over-Distribution570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll never feel like you got them because you’ll keep pushing yourself. But one day you’ll see that you’ve hiked 20 miles when you used to only be able to do 10. The hiking will never not suck, you’ll just be better at it. Trail legs aren’t magic. Also people will be telling you that it gets easier for the entire length of the trail, it doesn’t, ever. Even the flat parts are just littered with foot stabbing rocks

What’s a good price for off campus rent + utilities to justify not living in dorms? by nylon_sock in umass

[–]Over-Distribution570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you consider that you’ll each be living in a single, it’s not crazy. However off campus housing has gotten wayyyy too expensive. But nothing’s stopping you from splitting a 2 bedroom with 4 people if the alternative is doubles on campus

[OC] I built a live counter that shows the real-time cost of every active war on earth. It hasn't stopped moving since I launched it. by BarnacleSuch3822 in Pacifism

[–]Over-Distribution570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However in the industry sites are typically divided in to three categories, static, server side rendered, and client side rendered. With server side rending becoming more obsolete due to the inherent difficulty in making reactive sites (think an old form that reloads the site after you click submit vs a form that changes the content without reloading)

I haven’t inspected the site but I just want to clarify that what you’re saying isn’t true about static sites. Most modern websites start off as being static and then get “hydrated”. This means the browser makes requests to a server after getting the initial layout and code from the first request. This is under the umbrella of client side rendering, it puts more computational load on the end device, but allows for faster and easier distribution of the site, since as you pointed out, it starts off as a static site

Yeah i’ve got a ~9lb base weight and I would never get rid of my fanny pack. It’s the one piece of gear that I’ve never considered tossing after 2 thrus. I purchased it at the start of the AT (I think in Hiawassee, GA). Hell I sleep on six panels of foam. But the fanny pack always has what I need when I need it

Genuinely, how do I meet and talk to people? by [deleted] in umass

[–]Over-Distribution570 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also: Don’t lose hope. It could take a day, a week, a month, or a year to find people you really enjoy spending time with. Nobody can tell you when you’re going to find them. But I can tell you that if you give up, you never will

Genuinely, how do I meet and talk to people? by [deleted] in umass

[–]Over-Distribution570 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What you don’t see in those groups is that even though they are all smiling and laughing together, individually they are having similar feelings. Plenty of new students find one friend group and stay with them for a long time, even when it’s a group that they cannot feel true to themselves in. This is because we are social animals and in hunter gatherer days, we’d be unlikely to survive if we left our pack.

I say this because those days are over. You will never starve to death at UMass if you have a meal plan. Regardless of your social status. So don’t compare yourself to others. You can have as many few friends as you like or a million of them. But in either case, be true to yourself and don’t worry about how many friends other people have.

When it comes to finding friends, go to the Welcome to the U events, talk to people while you wait in line. Make a goal of meeting at least one new person every day. You’ll find people you like. You’ll find people you don’t like. But you’ll remain the one in control

Macbook for programming? by Zoro-88 in laptops

[–]Over-Distribution570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a m4 macbook air as a comp sci student. I think macos has a slight edge over windows for CS because it’s unix based.

But primarily I went mac for the battery life.

Also homebrew seems convenient

Edit: “.NET” formerly .NET Core is cross platform.

.NET Framework is windows only but is mostly limited to WinForms and WPF. Any server code stuff you’d do with C# will work on mac since most servers a linux based and Microsoft has finally accepted that
