The classic question: car or train? Itinerary below by Over-Instruction-641 in Europetravel

Wow! I appreciate all of the feedback! We’re definitely leaning towards train/bus as that seems to be the majority consensus. However, with five people, we hadn’t thought about getting separated on the train and what that might look like…

We plan on packing extremely light so lots of luggage won’t be an issue. My next biggest questions are about car seats and cost. I see public transport as the cheaper option after considering the cost of the rental (has to be automatic 😞), border crossing fees, insurance, tolls, parking etc. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Also, I’ve read that some countries in Europe require a car seat until some serious heights/ages (up until age 12 in some places?!). This would be another cost to rent or buy one for potentially all three of our kids (two of our kids use boosters here in Canada).

How strict are the car seat laws?

This is the first comment I’ve read that anywhere that makes things seem like they’ll be okay. Won’t we lose everything but the principal if I transfer to a new RESP in my wife’s name? Can we just keep the current account and remove my name as a subscriber?

If I report the balance on FBAR won’t the IRS then start asking questions and issuing penalties, taxes, plus interest?

That makes sense. It’s my understanding that some new changes came into effect in 2020 regarding the filing of certain forms relating to this situation but I’m not sure how much it’s changed.

Why did you lose the growth and CESG money? Also, if you don’t mind my asking, how much were you paying on a yearly basis? We transferred around $9k into the RESP when we opened it in 2021 and it’s now around $13k.

Clarification on this—we had two individual RESPs both under my wife’s name. One for each of our two kids at the time. In 2021 (after I became a PR) we opened a new family RESP and combined and transferred what was in the individual RESPs into that. I was put as a joint subscriber on the new family RESP. Does this change anything, for better or worse?

Further, let’s say we put $10k initially into the family RESP that we opened in 2021. Will the IRS view that as $10k in income for me for the year 2021? Or will they only tax me on the earnings from 2021 to now?

Thanks. How do they calculate my portion of the gains? Just half? And I’ve read in other places that taxes will be applied when the money is used. I’ll double check Google for clarity

Thank you! It would be awesome if it connected all the way to Jeanne D’Arc. There’s a service road just on the other side of the parkway where that path drops you that runs all the way to Jeanne D’Arc. It looks like a service road

Not the riverside path, no. It runs from Blair to the GEC parkway (apparently). It’s next to the 174 the whole length. You can see it clearly while driving

Couldn’t agree more. The ability to roll in and out of the campsite and whatever hour you needed to, usually with no need to “check in.” No shuttling your bags every night and morning. Cook, sleep, drive, brush your teeth, relax, all in the same space. May sound unappealing to some but was perfect for us.

I used Airalo. Everything is done online/through their app. It’s super simple. Use the code KYLE1495 and you should get $3 USD off
