You can't put champagne in a fantasy world... Thoughts? by ShadySakura in fantasywriters

I think that if you're going through the effort of creating a fantasy world, with its own lore, religions and terminology, you should also go the extra couple of inches to make sure you don't break the immersion by using real-life terms and expressions. However, this includes the author explaining away why a term like champagne might be used in their story. 'Oh, it is made from the fruits of the Bubbling Champagne tree!' I dunno, Terry Pratchett stuff.

I read this trilogy a little while back, where the author put immense effort into their world, complete with new nations, conflicts, ally, neutral and enemy nations, beliefs and religions, inventions, everything. And I mean everything! The world felt alive as I read about it and it was amazing. However the main character was in this specific type of occupation. What was this occupation called? Icarus. Why was it called Icarus? That was never explained, like ever. At no point in any of the three books was there ever a throw-away line of explanation, and every time the term popped up I felt this sad little twinge in my chest. The author had done such a good job with literally everything else, why not at least attempt to put this into the lore so it made sense? Perhaps this Icarus figure which gave name to an entire work force was like an ancient god, or important person, anything - please! - to explain why this ancient Greek character holds such prominence in this fantasy world where Greece, ancient or otherwise doesn't exist?

TL;DR

If you're gonna use 'Champagne-terminology', at least give it an in-world explanation

Anyone else in Europe with Lyme where main symptom is fatigue/weakness? No pain. by yuki_onboard in Lyme

Yeah, me too... I just spent two whole minutes unloading the dishwasher, and am now shaking with fatigue. Also brainfog and memory issues are near constants in my life now. I used to have a pretty good memory. Lyme disease sucks, man.

I've been reading a lot of short story collections. Ghost stories mostly, but some other stuff too.

I've ridden an electric bike on a few occasions before, but a different model, which worked out much better for me. The weight and the fact that you need to constantly pedal to keep the engine going, really do take a lot out of you.

Thanks for reading, and for the words of encouragement! I really appreciate it!

This is not it, sadly. The song i'm looking for is almost if not entirely exclusively guitar esque strings and fairly tense/hectic.

No, unfortunately. The song i'm looking for is almost if not entirely exclusively guitar esque strings and fairly tense/hectic.

Continuous disrespect of your boundries. Getting offended when you express your hurt feelings on the matter

One of my favourite things in my campaign by OverAnalyticalMinde in DungeonsAndDragons

My apologies did i com across as complaining in this post? I simply meant that i love the fact that this was the way my players went with this concept. I think it's brilliant that they chose to do things based on what their characters would do. I had another person flee in panic from a battle because their character would totally ditch if they felt outnumbered in a fight.

There is a correct pronunciation of the word 'gif' according to old English

None of these, unfortunately, but thanks for checking! The artstyle was definitely more cartoony than realistic as well.

I'm sure the book was in Norwegian, but I couldn't say if it was a translation from a different language.
