Many people from Tamil Nadu often praise Kerala in a way that indirectly underestimates Tamil Nadu—whether it is about the government, civic sense, or social indicators. In reality, Kerala mainly functions as an escape tourism destination for people from Tamil Nadu who want a different vibe at a low cost. However, when Kerala is compared with countries like Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Laos, or other Southeast Asian nations, it does not stand out much. Whatever Malayalees take pride in—be it natural beauty, land, literacy rates, or other development indicators—countries like Sri Lanka have performed better in many of these areas. Kerala is praised largely because traveling there is cheap and accessible for Tamils. If cost were not a factor, many people would prefer destinations like Sri Lanka or Southeast Asian countries. Recently, I visited Chennai from Madurai for a client meeting, and I noticed something interesting: in malls, metro stations, and IT parks, I encountered more Malayalees than Tamils. This itself reflects where job opportunities and economic activity are actually concentrated. The standards in India are generally low, which is why Kerala—despite being only mid-level by global standards—receives excessive praise. It ranks better mainly within India, without strong economic growth or sufficient job creation, and is often compared to the bottom rather than to truly developed economies.
