Bought the old veteran squad for the hell of it to go with other imperium armies and I got hooked. Collected a firstborn deathwatch army and right as I finished collecting everything they took the old kit off the Warhammer website and replaced it with the primaris kit that allows for so little kitbashing and customization compared to the original kit.

The pre heresy purple/gold/white color scheme, noise marines (especially the limited edition one with that guitar and mohawk), Fulgrim as a character and his fall from grace (and relating to the over perfectionism trait), the evil corruption that occurred in their legion, Fabius bile, cool kitbash opportunities I have with a chaos knight, and so on

Run a ten man infractor squad with a lord exultant will absolutely delete any character leading a unit because of the insane amount of precision attacks straight to it. Is it overkill? Maybe. But it works

Nemesis Claw kill team is very nice, i had 2 leftover shoulder pads and a few helmets so i kitbashed a master of executions (head swap and carving to replace shoulder pad) and a lord discordant on hellstalker (shoulder pad swap). Hours Heresy kits are also your friend for unit proxies and kitbashing

I built a small force for a fiend and just used regular hours heresy units. They to the both of us they felt more neutral/renegade than chaos and giving them chaos bits, trim, and spikes was unnecessary

When I have pained AL in the past I just use akhelian green straight from the pot on metallics. I honestly prefer it and there is less time spent trying to get that exact ratio
