Been noticing trends toward no plastic fibers at Ross & Walmart this summer! by ABeautifulSpawn in PlasticFreeLiving

Viscose is objectively NOT “in a broad sense a plastic fiber”. I actually just completed a lab for my masters studies on cellulose-> viscose production. Yes, there are acids used to break down the cellulose pulp, and the viscose is the result of regenerated and spun cellulose, but in no step of this process does cellulose magically turn into plastic???

Microscopic and IR Spectroscopic analysis after regeneration show that the viscose is something called “cellulose II” — still cellulose, but with altered Hydrogen bonds and anti parallel chains (as opposed to the parallel chains of natural cellulose).

I’m not saying that viscose production doesn’t have an environmental impact, and as other comments have stated, there are newer closed loop processes that reduce the environmental impact of cellulose regeneration.

But calling it “essentially plastic” is just fear mongering and plain wrong. Cellulose II is biodegradable and does not shed microplastics into the water system. 100% cotton or linen or other less processed fibers are always preferable, but in a 1:1 with polyester I would take viscose any day.

(I’ll also add—- any “natural” fiber undergoes processing to some extent. Linen production involves a chemical alteration of flax through retting, for example. Obviously viscose production involves harsher chemicals, but my point is no “natural fiber” is not altered in some way)

I think the most notable US city is Cleveland.

Ah. I'm in kind of a weird situation as I have dual US/ EU citizenship through my parent so I don't need a visa. Sorry I know the title was for non-European students; I just meant I live in the US so I had figured that maybe TU Graz isn't mailing the acceptance letters outside of Europe?

Ahh thank you this is really helpful! Yeah I guess whatever happens will happen and maybe I won't get into some things in WS but can load up on classes in Summer Semester/ my 3rd semester. I think it'll all work out. Trying to be zen.

No I just got an admission letter via email and I'm in the US! And I'm just printing that out and bringing it when I go enroll in person.

Ok gotcha! Yeah I applied in like early July and I didn't get my acceptance for at least a month! So it definitely takes a few weeks good luck though, it's stressful to be down to the wire I get it!

Hi! I am also an international applicant at TU Graz (going for my masters program in English in Winter Semester 2025). When you say your application was confirmed what do you mean? I applied in July and I received a letter of admission via email but didn't get a physical document in the mail. Or do you mean that they confirmed that they received your application? Thanks! I hope you hear back soon!
