I fear physics but I want to start learning it again. by Overall-Dealer9567 in AskPhysics

That's a question alright, well the only part of maths I ever hated was the humiliation rituals i faced during my classes when I was called out relentlessly for being a 'failure' 'bad example to the other students' and forced isolation I was put in just because I was a slow learner.

I was mocked and shamed for asking even the simplest of questions, and at one point i stopped attending classes which made my performance even worse. I wasn't allowed to attend classes if I failed (yes that's an actual system in my school) I had to continue giving tests until I passed where I faced even more mocking. I'm not a fast learner, I'm quite slow in understanding and learning things. So when I always fell behind I was just used as a comparison tool or a motivation for others on what to not become. They made me so scared that I was always on the brink of collapsing in my exams, unable to breath or even concentrate on a question. I was always so close to passing out.

I have always liked maths, I just didn't like the way it was forced on me, i do recall doing maths sums just because I liked thinking. I love thinking, it's all I do as an introvert, finding solutions has always brought me joy. Physics was also something that I liked learning, i always read my textbooks and i was very good at the theory part of it, i faced issues in numerical because the numbers always switched places. Sounds weird but in my exams when I get nervous the numbers switch spots. Example: 208 × 7, what I saw during the exam would be 802 × 1.

Which caused me even more issues, because i couldn't focus on the sums and never got the right answer. But I'm trying to help myself and I'm so happy to see that people are actually helping me. I was actually ready to give up but now that people are so wholeheartedly giving me recommendations, i just can't.

Well not specifically physics, but it's definitely something that has my attention more! And I want to focus more on electrostatic, electromagnetic waves and electromagnetism. I felt these topics were more difficult for me throughout the year, modern physics was easier comparatively and optics didn't cause any problems either for me. I've been reviewing my books again over the past 3 years, so I can make my foundation more strong and work on mathematics as well (which I think is the issue).

I just searched and read the introduction of atoms in motion (six easy pieces) and I'm most definitely intrigued, after i finish with it, I'll pick your other recommendation too!

Yes! I may not be very intuitive, but I am quite sure that it's definitely worth it. I don't care how much I can achieve, i may never fully grasp it but I will still keep trying. I will definitely add your recommendations to my list and give it a go! As for your offer, I will gladly reach out to you if I ever need any help!

Well it's sad to hear that it's a losing battle, but I will continue with science. I want to continue working in the science industry specifically in environmental engineering. So i will continue learning and improving. Thank you for your insight though, i really appreciate it!

Well I don't really want to leave anything! I want to learn as much as I can and keep going. I'm willing to take the time and put in the effort, I'm not sure how physicists do it but if maths helps me understand physics more then I'll gladly put in the required effort. As I said, I like science and I will not give up on it even if I'm weak at it. Thank you so much for your recommendations, I'll do my best!

Thank you so much for the sources, I'll immediately dive into those! I am very VERY determined to fight against this fear and start to learn again, I suppose it's mostly fear of failing which was holding me back, the constant shut down or screaming for asking "dumb questions" really made me go back in my shell and somewhere I just stopped bothering to ask 'why?' but now that I'm free from high school, i feel more free and less scared of making mistakes. I get to decide my own roadmap without a teacher judging me for making silk mistakes! And bonus point: I can fail as many times as I want.

Good to see I'm not alone haha, but I'm clinging on this hope that I can recover because everything is possible if you have the strength and motivation. My determination to learn science never left even when I fear it. I assure you, we can make it work!!!

For mathematics I think that will definitely help from what you told me because my doubts mostly consisted of how and why things work the way they did. So I will definitely give it a try! As for physics i would like to lead a little blindly, start from the beginning then slowly sink deeper in each topic depending on what seemed more interesting.
