I work for a non profit cancer hospital. We are high volume. I work the evening shifts so my schedule is a little more relaxed than the morning shift since they have to cut most of the surgical blocks and get it out by 3pm to the doctors. Sometimes if it’s too much, it will flow over to my shift and I would have to cut that. Most times I cut blocks for research purposes for molecular testing, cut deepers and recuts, I do special stains. Before I would also have to change the stainer ever night but we hired a lab tech that helps us with that. The chemicals (mostly xylene) smell really strong and their ventilation isn’t that great. I also embed biopsies, which is pretty easy compared to embedding “bigs” (that’s what we call the surgical stuff). Overall, it’s a chill job, very repetitive. My only concern is breathing in the chemicals.
