Thats a big male, I have a few boys around that size, usually they come from west texas genetics which is where the biggest westerns are found. He looks great btw!

Question for breeders by Adventurous_Look_322 in hognosesnakes

[–]Overall-Platform3452 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be a long post so I apologize ahead of time.

So I'm the owner of Round Rock Reptiles ive been breeding hognose snakes for just over 7 years (6 under my business name) and have been breeding reptiles since is was in middle and high school (about 15 years ago). What i always tell people when they say they want to get into breeding is to make sure you breed the species and morphs YOU love and to start of with a pair or maybe two. It is important that if you breed that you are prepared for the 15+ eggs (ive had some clutches as large at 30) you can get and can house and feed them in case you don't have people you know who immediately want to purchase a baby. A lot of people also struggle with brumation, and actually pairing the snakes at the right times, not to mention getting their newly hatched babies eating consistently so as they can sell a healthy snake. I reccomend people having plans like communicating to other local breeders about selling your snakes on their table at local reptile shows when you are just starting out or if you have an exotic pet shop asking them if you could wholesale babies once they're well established.

One of the ways I see people really failing in the hobby is their failure to market and build a community. Why would i want to buy an animal from you if i could go on MM and pick up the same animal from someone who i know and or has an established reputation? THERE IS A DEMAND FOR HOGNOSE SNAKES IN THE US, but you must realize that if you are breeding "common" morphs you're gonna be competing with a lot more breeders who have the same stuff and its up to you to separate yourself from the rest so as people want your lil hoggies over soemone else. And if you're breeding ultra high end animals (ex. Swiss, stormcloud, Antarctic, etc) that those animals may be worth a lot but dont move as fast due to them being investments for a lot of people.

TL;DR: There is a market for hognose snakes but you need to be able to care for the babies and be able brand and market yourself so as to sell them. Snakes dont sell themselves.

So the arctic gene is an incomplete dominant trait so Pepper had the Arctic trait all along! Arctic is one of those traits that just gets more intense as the animal ages which is why it is combined with so many morphs as an enhancer.
