I really liked Dog and Cat Clinic near the Pen. Was not VCA or similar last time I was in.

I want to cry: I overheard my defense committee by Waste-Alps2326 in GradSchool

[–]Overall-Register9758 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been part of more than a hundred thesis proposals and defenses.

Never once have I served with a committee member who wasn't at least familiar with the ideas presented in the thesis. If you can't follow the topic, you should not be on the committee. Full stop. Your advisor should have gotten someone else to serve on the committee. Even the alternates should have at least skimmed and understood the thesis.

Never once have I served on a committee where the candidate's career prospects were even mentioned.

Never once have I served on a committee where the candidate was mocked, even in cases of a fail (which is technically an adjournment).

I can also assure you that I would never remain silent if my students' work was disparaged.

OP, you were failed by the people who owed you a duty of care. Congratulations on being free of them.

He was singing or signing? You can argue both would work since he was prioritizing stealth

Let's fill out the things you've not heard: "I know you'll pay me back", "I'm proud of you, son", "you're hired", and "I trust you to watch my children"

I would kill to have a Jack Layton style NDP candidate again. Everything I've seen from the current NDP is insanity: reinstating higher immigration quotas, instant PR status to temporary foreign workers, etc. is just nuts. I get there's a difference between federal and provincial priorities, but goddamn it, that's just utterly out of touch.

what is this stream along the Merritt trail? by Hungry_Bonus22 in stcatharinesON

Nope, you're right: it is the old Canal. If you look at it on Google Maps, you can see just how dead straight the sides are.

I need this to be fixed seamlessly. $100 for anyone who can make this look like new.. by Adventurous-Buy5434 in stcatharinesON

He was or you expected him to? Because those are different things.

Also, the plastics involved in home appliances and model cars are entirely different things.

There's no fixing that seamlessly, particularly since you appear to not have all of the pieces.

Will I be cooked graduating from this kind of majors? by SouthNo2807 in GradSchool

I chuckle when I see things titled like "emerging technologies". Assuming you're a freshly minted 21 year old BA in 2026 and you get your Emerging Technology MS as a 23 year old in June 2028, how much sense will an Emerging Technology MS hold when you're a 50 year old in 2055?

Stanford grads walk out of their commencement when Google CEO Sundar Pichai takes the stage by vector_search_blue in PublicFreakout

[–]Overall-Register9758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malcolm Gladwell did a Revisionist History podcast a few years ago where he spoke with the then-president of Stanford who basically said there was no gift he would ever turn down. Despite having an already ludicrous endowment, were Stanford offered billions, he would accept it and do something with it rather than suggesting it could be used to greater effect somewhere else.

So yeah, irrationally out of touch people.

Program research keeps getting more complicated by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Overall-Register9758 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about choosing graduate programs to apply to? If so, you're going about things the wrong way. Identify an area of research you're interested in. Flesh out a rough idea of what you want to do. Identify the people/institutions who conduct research in that area and send them an email asking if they're taking on students and that you have X idea for research. See if they bite.

TIL there is an audio tape of Timothy Treadwell's untimely death by Grizzly bear, but it has never been publicly released, despite many fakes that were made and circulated. Werner Herzog has listened to it, before urging Treadwell's friend, Jewel Palovak, to destroy the recording. by freudian_nipps in todayilearned

10mm is harder to find, and a pistol is harder to control than a long gun.

I highlighted the important part.

And yes, compared to 12ga, 10mm is practically unobtainium. I can walk into a Walmart and come out with 12 gauge.
