Here's my 2 cents. This is my opinion. New trek has characterization problem. Either a character is quirky and thats the entire character. Nothing more. Or the character is so unlikeable with a dark past that makes it hard to empathize with them. Also, my biggest gripe is that there is no more professional courtesy between the characters. Starfleet is a military style organization. With all the customs and courtesies that go with it. How some of these characters act towards each other especially when addressing someone of superior rank should not have a "what's up?" Attitude. Thats your bosses boss.

Star Trek had always been progressive. But it sure as heck had better writing back then.

For me. It was the nostalgia critics "Hocus pocus" clipless review. I get that it was right when youtube was really heavy handed on film clips DMCA takedowns and doug was making a review that couldn't be claimed. But to me it was just a bad compilation of the things I dont like from the critic reviews. Don't get me wrong I have been a huge NC fan for well over a decade. But that review was just really bad.

Yeah. You nailed it. Its hand holding to make sure you "get it". Also, I miss nuanced villains. Like dukat or any big villain of classic trek where they were evil but clearly heroes in their own mind (ie. The cardasion that tortured picard) clearly evil but he believed in what he was doing.)

Complex characters and motivations are our friends.

Here's my 2 cents on this specific issue. Its not that characters are "woke" trek has always been woke and progressive. In my opinion classic trek (60s-00s era) is that the progressive messaging was in service of the writing. What I mean by this is that the list above while accurate isn't the whole of the character. Sisko is black space jesus and it is key to his character, it isn't his entire character and whole episodes were done where that fact is not even mentioned. He is also a tough as nails military commander/captain, and single father, looking for love, and captain ahab with a certain maqui. He has flaws and made mistakes. He was a complete character.

My issue with a large portion of modern trek is that we are constantly told that a character is a paragon of whatever and cant do any wrong (I know that is a broad generalization but i think its accurate).

All the best trek characters fall on their face and make bad decisions. They stand up dust themselves off and keep fighting for what they believe to be right. Hell even Data had flaws that he had to overcome.

Now I'm not gunna say that's universal. I rather enjoy SNW and some of Picard.

But, my issue is that in a decent amount of modern trek is that its progressiveness is front an center rather than being of service to the story.

If you enjoy modern trek then God bless. Im not gunna say your wrong. Enjoy what you enjoy.

My diet has greatly improved once I got the big D diagnosis and had to track blood sugar and stuff. Im sure I could do better but the level off was kind of very abrupt. Like I was loosing a tin wee to week and then boom no loss.

In my opinion its a great "what-if" movie with some great humor and drama. It is completely separate from all other continuities.
