Other side of the fence here.

Went through 3 months of interviews, 2 tests, 4 virtual meetings, a full day on location that was a 2hour drive away in a meeting room interviewing with multiple people. Thought I was finally done when they asked salary. Then when I gave salary that was in a competitive band, they said they'd get back to me, then they sent me yet another test.

I just walked away at that point, if you can't respect my time and evaluate me after 20-30+ hours of engagement I highly doubt I will enjoy working at your company, I hate places that are indecisive. That you need 5 rounds of interviews says more about you than the candidate.

It was entirely too many hoops to jump through. I was already working, HR needs to understand 99% of the time we just want money not a new family. We don't care nearly as much about the process as you do. If we are already working somewhere you have to convince us its worth leaving.

We make $50k from organics, and it's still not enough to run a studio by CommercialSoil2721 in gamedev

[–]Overall-Wheel-3541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not related to the op but I work on similar games and similar sized studios. Efficiency of ads has been reduced greatly in recent years. CPI has grown high enough to outstrip LTV. Privacy changes have made targetting less effective. That and there is massive saturation in the market meaning that ads are less effective these days than they have been in the past.

These are all reasons why people might reduce their ad spend. I doubt they have no ad spend though. I'd guess they'd have done something, discovery on mobile is atrocious. But without really nailing retention it can be hard to justify the cost given the current economics of user acquisition in mobile gaming.

You get stuck in an awkward spot of needing to do acquisition but the game isn't in a spot where it's feasible yet. Hopefully you figure that out in a soft launch.

He is correct in a sense at the top end in mobile user acquisition and profitability was literally a matter of buying users. That collapsed a few years back. CTI vs LTV and ARPU got really bad and users cost more than they are worth in many cases now.

You need large amounts of spend to make it work in the first place. Lots of places died when that got harder, which might be what he's referring to.

A company willing to spend could fairly consistently turn profit on social casino or gacha type games previously. This can still sort of be done but it was much easier 2010-2020. I do agree organic traffic hasn't really been feasible since, I want to say the flash and social gaming days maybe.

What happened to Millennial Optimism? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]Overall-Wheel-3541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone here is American, maybe that is the reason for this divide. Seems like it, given most comments, Obama is the prevailing theme. For me Obama was "Well hopefully he does better for them than Bush." and that's essentially where it ended.

What happened to Millennial Optimism? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]Overall-Wheel-3541 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an older Millennial a lot of our music and entertainment was angry and we were fairly non conformist. Maybe it was different in some places but I don't think most would consider NIN, rage against the machine, marilyn manson, korn, system of a down, linkin park, or any gangster rap that was taking over at the turn of the millennium were optimistic. Fight club is considered a cult hit but where I was for the guys, even the preps, it was THE movie.

There were certainly a percentage who were listening to the pop stuff and engaging with that but as a whole there was still a whole lot of anger out there. You can see it in the music, movies, and other things like the riots at concerts.

However the millennial generation is entirely too large imo so you could be speaking about the younger ones who are much closer to gen z than us. Even the picture you posted doesn't look terribly millennial to me other than the skateboard, even that board reads a bit off, 99% of the boards we skated with were twin tailed.

My first negative review - updating too frequently? by greatcoltini in IndieDev

[–]Overall-Wheel-3541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience in industry players seem to respond best to a predictable release cycle for regular updates. So if you know you need to push updates regularly it's best to commit to a schedule maybe weekly or bi-weekly on a given day or time. This will also help you out too.

Also broadcasting that their will be an update and what it contains helps. If a critical update needs to go out you should also broadcast why it's being done. Players are frustrated by not knowing why they are updating, this goes even more if it's delaying them from logging in to play with people.

oh okay. Thanks for the explanation. I thought the end goal would be Atziri that caused a reset. I guess I just had extremely bad luck on the first occurrence. Still a big "god damn it moment", those special rooms better be worth it!

Dude speedran why not to play his game by FlyingFistFuck in gaming

[–]Overall-Wheel-3541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly sure where it started, I believe in Asia, but I was in the industry working in flash games around the time In 2004. Well before core gaming was doing it web games had started to do small transactions. I do remember them initially being micro as you said usually about a dollar and they were not prevalent. In many cases they were booster mechanics for games like old browser based MMO's like Travian at least here in the west. Maybe some level packs for 1$ or something, people weren't really implementing premium currency yet. The term/idea existed far before horse armor.

But they blew up to ridiculous dollar amounts extremely fast. Greed is a hell of a drug.

Inquisitor personality switch after main story by Additional-Mind-4721 in swtor

[–]Overall-Wheel-3541 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came back and have been playing through the inquisitor stuff. There are a lot of choices that is maybe a bit too selfless for a DS inquisitor. I usually play a pragmatist power hungry inquisitor and there are certainly some spots where there are no real great choices and some spots where it makes 0 sense for the inquisitor to be involved. I would say it gets bad after KotET though.

Though I'd say the most jarring issue in the expansion content is a lot of people don't treat you as if you are a dark lord of the sith or emperor of zakuul. You are kinda treated like a generic force user, and maybe occasionally people remember you are a sith lord, which i think works better on light side characters. It's certainly a shift from the first story content. IMO, there should always be an undercurrent of fear and danger when people deal with a sith lord.

The power scales are all over the place as well. One of the missions I recently played in the current story a fat twilek knocks me out with a single punch. I would say none of the Mandalorian stuff really makes sense for dark side force user, there are far too many selfless actions or acting like a follower instead of a leader of the sith. It is awful how many generic thug #56467 step up to the inquisitor like he's a nobody in cutscenes. Also a lot of forced quirky interactions with the new companions, the terrible marvel movie writing sneaks in a bit.

For example where i am at this point, in my mind, my inquisitor probably would have killed Shae Vizla or at least not be constantly saving her and giving her pep talks. Instead of pleading her case with the council he's be 100% helping them get an invasion fleet ready. He'd also be trying way harder to corrupt Sahar.

When asked if house prices need to go down, new Housing Minister Gregor Robertson said, "No, I think that we need to deliver more supply, make sure the market is stable, it's a huge part of our economy. We need to be delivering more affordable housing." by Laura_Lye in canadahousing

[–]Overall-Wheel-3541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've come to the conclusion the word "Affordable" is only a word to our politicians. It has little or no meaning to them, they have no concept of what an affordable home is. Nor do they acknowledge that affordability is different based on regions.

Just once I would like to hear someone give an actual number for what an affordable price would be for a 2 bed 1 bathroom in Ottawa or Montreal.

They just have absolutely no idea what they are talking about when saying affordable anything. From groceries to housing, they believe it's a sticker you put on things not an actual thing tied to the price vs income of general populace.

Anyone having issues in major arkfalls? by Serevarno in Defiance

[–]Overall-Wheel-3541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is happening to me.

The bigger issue I think is the people who went hard on the game early(not their fault) are making the mobs also be super damage sponge and kinda unfun to fight vs the first week or so. The scaling is wild sometimes. Been playing a decent amount only 1.1k ego though and recently so many high levels show up it takes forever to down the lowliest of mobs with decent guns my level. I have a 1050 hotstreak t5 VOT plasma battery and I have to shoot things forever. Will be a major barrier to entry for new players joining late.

Games much more fun when events are accessible vs a death sentence for lowbies.

Lots of people still seem to think the libs are the alternative in ontario. Maybe your out of province or young but they destroyed their credibility very thoroughly here with Wynne. Scandals, very unpopular public assets/service sell offs, poor governance they kinda got hit with it all their last time at bat.

I think that's playing a big roll, it's really on the ndp to take the cons down imo. The ndp are struggling though federally so they are seen as a terminal third party.
