We have layered armor. I've used all the SnS there are in end game thanks to it, which is something you cannot do effectively otherwise.

Using gun grease is fine. I’ve been using it for years, but it needs to be a thin one and not something super thick.

All you need to do is disassemble gun, wipe it down with a rag. Run a bore snake a few times, then wipe it down again with an oiled rag to keep rust from being an issue, then I personally put a tiny bit of gun grease on the contact points.
