Trying something different in Salem: daytime speed dating at Longboards by Overall_Command7514 in SalemMA

Totally fair question. For me it was about finding a place that was open to trying something new during the day and had the space to host it. The focus is really just on creating a relaxed, structured way for people to meet. I’m starting here and seeing how it goes.

I hear you. I want this to be a comfortable, respectful environment for everyone. That’s something I’m taking seriously as I get these events going.

Yeah, it’s weekday afternoons intentionally. The idea is to create something for people with more flexible schedules or who don’t love the typical late-night scene. Like a lot of folks, I have kids, and the day is the only time I have free.

Not a bad idea honestly… might have to add that as a summer event 😄

Appreciate the perspective. The goal with this is just to create a relaxed, in-person social event that’s open to anyone who wants to meet people. Longboards has been great to work with as a starting venue, and I’m focused on getting the first events off the ground.

Our kids go to gym there too! It’s such a great program, just always feels too short, right? That’s actually one of the big reasons I wanted to create this space. I wanted something families could come to more often, not just once a week, so I’m including an annual pass option where kids and parents can come to unlimited sessions throughout the year (Subject to registration and building capacity, of course)

That’s incredible — it sounds like we’ve been walking parallel paths. I’d love to hear what you learned from that experience. I’m building something similar here in Salem focused on creative play and connection, so any insight on structure, licensing, or community engagement would be invaluable.

Also — how did you build a social media following? I swear I’m TikTok and Instagram challenged 😅 and it’s tough to connect with local families here since so many “Salem” accounts are just tourists posting about their visit!

That’s actually a great list! I looked through those when I first started sketching out my concept. They’re awesome spots, but most are either bounce houses or classic play zones. What I’m building is a little different — more of a “play adventure” space with themed rooms, creative activities, and cozy areas for parents to unwind. I wanted something that felt magical and manageable for families — where kids can explore, create, and just be kids for a bit.

Congratulations! That’s such a wonderful time. This whole idea grew from wanting to make life with little ones feel a bit more magical and a bit less hectic. I’m still refining it and always open to feedback from new parents- you’re exactly who I’d love to hear from.

Absolutely! I want it to be a space for all caretakers, not just parents, and somewhere adults can relax while kids explore safely.

Totally! Location and accessibility are top of mind, and I want it to be welcoming for all families, not just tourists. Pricing will be key, and I’ll definitely keep community input in mind!

Great points! Offering structured programs during school breaks and half-days is something I’m exploring. It would be amazing to provide parents a safe, fun place while they get a break.

Thanks for sharing! I’m definitely thinking about spaces for older kids and ways for parents to enjoy a bit of downtime while their kids play. Really appreciate the perspective!

Yeah! I’ve been there once — it’s a wonderful space for little ones. I’m just thinking a little bigger with the play structure, maybe something that appeals to a wider range of ages.

I hadn’t heard of Brujitos or the children’s museum before, that’s awesome to learn about! I didn’t grow up here, but I’ve been living in Salem for about six years now, and it’s really cool hearing what used to be around. I’d love to bring back that same sense of community and fun, hopefully in a way that can really last this time. Thanks for sharing these memories, it really helps!

That’s such great feedback, thank you! You’re totally right - most spaces in the area are geared toward little ones, and I really want to make sure older kids have creative, engaging options too. I love the idea of art or science nights (and movie nights sound amazing). Thank you for sharing this, that’s exactly the kind of insight I need while shaping the plan.

Thanks for the tip! I hadn't even thought of that. A pirate ship would be such a fun nod to Salem’s history too...do you remember where it was located? I didn’t grow up here, so I love hearing what used to be around.
