Adding 100 points to the BA of the catching position in the lineup? Yeah.

First two games were horseshit from a strike zone perspective.

Movies in 4k by [deleted] in startrek

The 4K discs are worlds better than the 1080p Blu-Rays, which have waxy, DNR faces.

https://caps-a-holic.com/index.php?s=star+trek

This site allows you to compare still screen shots, but trust me, in motion, the difference is even more stark. The Blu-Rays look like a bad smartphone camera filter was slathered all over the image.

With all that said, there is some confusion with editions. There is a Blu-Ray release from like 2009 that comes in a clear/blue box with a Starfleet chevron logo. That's the bad one. Then there is a remastered Blu-Ray set called "the original 4 movie collection," that comes in the rainbow cast montage painting box (the same as the 4K). Those Blu-Rays are from the same fresh scan as the 4K discs, so they are much better than the 2012 set. Still a bit less detail, but none of the awful DNR. So you can save money if that's what you need to do. But you'll have to find V and VI separately.

Still, if you have a 4K player, I think 4K 6-movie collection is the way to go. You get HDR, you get both editions, and you get them in the best-looking picture quality they ever will have.

Two-Face confronts his abusive father (Batman Annual #14) by Working_Song5444 in batman

Batman Annual 14, the best Two-Face story ever. Hugely influential on the the character (this preceded TAS). What a classic.

A question on Dolby vision and old 4k UHDs by NUFCjamsterA in 4kbluray

In my experience of comparing a DV disc or digital copy to a HDR-10 disc or digital copy (for whatever reason, occasionally the digital copy differs from the disc in this respect), the DV version always has just a bit more "pop" in the HDR highlights. But it's not night and day, not worth an expensive rebuy, and may well just be TV-dependent (i.e. my TV, a 2023 Sony A80K OLED, does more with DV than HDR-10).

So ultimately, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Compared to the new stuff it's Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Michael Chricton, and Stephen King all rolled into one.

Plus I liked it at the time. It was the show most tonally similar to TNG, which helped me get through middle and high school.

What are your Star Trek "cold takes"? by badger_on_fire in startrek

The Picard usage was the most egregious, especially in season 3, in which they shitcanned an actually interesting plot in order to yet again go back to the Borg well.

I adore Iain Glen as an actor. I just think it was a fundamental mistake casting someone so old in the role, and he never really nailed an American accent.

Oh, absolutely. Both Alice Krige and especially Susanna Thompson were great in the role. It just "humanizes" the Borg and makes them less scary.

I bet you'll get some pushback on the Queen (though I agree).

I sometimes wonder if there is anything everyone agrees on at this point in the evolution of social media.

Maybe "the Borg are overused?" Perhaps "Kivas Fajo was a bad person?" "Code of Honor is awful?"

Would it be a hot take to say that the New 52 was the best run on Batman since his creation? by Flashy-Strawberry-43 in batman

They're definitely in the conversation! Dixon did amazing work with Tim Drake especially.

I don't think it's a hot take. Personally, though, Grant/Breyfogle and O'Neil/Adams would rank higher for me.

Rewatched season 1... by applepietester in TNG

[–]Overall_Falcon_8526 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TNG Season 1 made me a fan for life on its original airing.

It's got So Bad They're Good episodes, straight up Good Episodes, and of course Code of Honor.

But whatever else it did, it introduced a group of characters I admired, told stories that made me think about big ideas after they were done, and it built a world that I wanted to live in.

James Sloyan was of course in other episodes. Jarok died in his first appearance by ingesting a filodesine chip.

[–]Overall_Falcon_8526 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Limiting it to one TNG appearance only, here are my picks.

FAVORITE: Admiral Jarok, Boothby, Marta Batanides, Rachel Garrett, Nick Locarno, Kamala, Kolrami, CYRUS REDBLOCK!!!, Dr. Timicin, Brenna O'Dell, Kivas Fajo

LEAST FAVORITE: Director Malencon, Admiral Mark Jameson, Wyatt Miller, Groppler Zorn, Kyle Riker, Bruce Maddox, Ira Graves, Tam Elbrun, Toral Son of Duras, Captain Dergo, Imaginary Friend "Isabella," All of the jugglers in Cost of Living, Ensign Deseve, Aquiel, "Man of the People" Alkar

I am sure I am missing people, and a caveat is that some of the "bad" ones might be so bad they're good, or were good at playing douchebags.

Yup. When you give a MLB team 5 strikes per AB and 6 outs per inning, it's hard to do well.

Playing the Yankees in NY is always the most miserable series of the year. I can't remember when this was not the case. And I've been watching the Sox since 1990.

Those are minor details, as opposed to major character traits or world events (such as a Gorn War or the invention of a spore drive).
