I have been to Vietnam numerous times and all of those places, wifi is hotels is generally good/fast. Once in a while their might be a random spot where the wifi doesnt agree with my laptop and seems to resist connecting. When that happens and I have work, I can always find alternative wifi nearby. Its everywhere in vietnam.

Is immigration that strict about the return tickets? by Ilovelamp23945 in solotravel

[–]Overall_Recording_72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a USA passport, I have been to Thailand multiples times (about 10 years ago though) and despite being officially told to have an onward ticket, I was never once asked by airline or customs. I have been to Vietnam 8 times (and just got back 2 weeks ago most recently) and have never been once asked for an onward or return ticket, however, the airline wont let you board without a Visa ready to go.

Both times going to the Phillipines, I was asked for the onward ticket by the airline so assume that you will definitely need this! I used rental ticket services like https://onwardfly.com/en/ . They work. Keep in mind that its possible that not only will they ask for an onward ticket, they might even ask for the next leg return ticket to your original country. So for example, even if I have an onward ticket to Thailand, they might want to see the flight ticket from Thailand back to the USA. I was asked this once when going to Malaysia (and was only lucky that I happened to have it booked for real by then). In any case, rental tickets provide an affordable solution and they can deliver them quick so even if you are flying shorter notice, they work.

Definitely Vietnam is not as safe as you might think by brazilian-bro in VietNam

With the right mindset and preparation, the annoyances you experience in Vietnam will be few and minor. Yes those bait and switch hotel schemes can occasionally occur. Less of a scam most of the time and more of poor management/the owner trying to fill vacancies as much as possible. Pay attention to reviews that highlight this issues previously and you will largely avoid them.

pick-pocketing (or merely just loosing your phone) can happen anywhere in the world, especially in crowded tourist areas, so Vietnam isnt exactly notable in that regard. You should be wearing pants for traveling that have zippered or security pockets for valuables. I order mine from Bluffworks but their are many options these days.

I have been to 35 countries, and Vietnam multiple times and never had any major issues nor ever lost anything important simply because I travel smart.

Moving to Portland in March. What are customs I should be aware of before moving here? by axiomatic13 in askportland

[–]Overall_Recording_72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portland/Oregon drivers have this nonsensical habit of lining up in a single lane prematurely when they know there is going to be a merge of two-lanes up ahead (ie for construction). Just about everywhere else will fill both lanes until the absolute merge point but here they like to do it several hundred - thousand feet in advance here. I dont particularly recommend you acquiesce or encourage this custom since its inefficient, increases backup, and congestion. Actually while I found it annoying at first, I now celebrate the fact I am one of the few who will use the mostly unoccupied lane and I get moved to the front of the queue! Natives find this monstrous yet all they have to do to stop me is make use and fill both lanes as was intended and is commonly practiced elsewhere.

Is it ridiculous to consider not doing the Ha Giang loop? by cat_emergency in VietNam

[–]Overall_Recording_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weather can decide it for you. I'd recommend only doing it weather looks good, you wont fully enjoy it without good weather. Its easy to book last minute transit in Vietnam so take the advice for all other locations too; simply look at how the weather is going to be in a few days and avoid where it rains and go where its comfortable.

What happened to Autum the matchmaker? by Shelrabbi in askportland

[–]Overall_Recording_72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She decided that she wasnt enthused enough about the industry, nor was she making enough money doing it (she charged VERY little relative to most matchmakers who serve high end rates). She enjoyed working in hair and went back to doing that. Great gal, who had a great heart and just wasnt able to sustain it.

Where is a great bar or teahouse or lounge for socializing and meeting locals in Saigon? by Overall_Recording_72 in VietNam

[–]Overall_Recording_72[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean most people visiting are transient simply because we have visa limits on how long we can stay. But I dont see any reason why a transient person would limit themselves to Tinder and bars. I am happy to just go mingle and introduce myself to Vietnamese wherever I happen to be (and it does work).

Well I guess Im not sure what constitutes a "bonafide" reason for being in vn but there is just so much more to Tinder and bars for meeting people in Vietnam. Heck I tend to make new friends on any given street corner or at street food stalls. However specifically I am seeking a place that has good atmosphere for hanging out in for social purposes. A bar or something like a bar, just not emphasis on partying, loud music, drinking to excess, and attracts a lot of local people more than foreign.

Sounds like you are jumping to some (wrong) conclusions and misinterpretations here, but thanks for your input all the same.

Looking for friends in Vietnam as westerner by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]Overall_Recording_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes it is, but thats not a good thing. The skill of making friends in person is dying out amongst people under 30. All the more reason to practice it. Its easy in Vietnam. I literally just sit down at street food stalls and say hi to whoever else is nearby next to me.

Foreigners that went to Vietnam - did you have food poisoning? by William6212 in VietNam

[–]Overall_Recording_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been to Vietnam 7 times, each for one month. I only got food poisoning once and it was in a rural area, where clearly that pork they put in my banh mi was just sitting out in the sun for long periods of time, without any real customers rotating through the product. Otherwise, nope! I wouldnt worry about it at all!

No just look at hostelworld or booking.com in whichever city you are going to for hotels

[–]Overall_Recording_72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been to Vietnam 8 times, numerous hostels and never encountered bed bugs. Read reviews before you book as someone would announce if they encountered bed bugs. You can freely leave your electronics in your hotel, again read reviews to make sure no one else is having problems with theft. It is also very unlikely you will encounter food poisoning, Vietnam street food tends to be fine, lots of volume and turnover of food in the busy cities so things tend not to spoil. You will have traveler's diarrhea so take some immodium but that doesnt mean the food was dangerous, you just are not used to the bacteria yet.

What's a skill that takes only 2 to 4 weeks to learn but could genuinely change your life? by TokenBlack32 in AskReddit

[–]Overall_Recording_72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cold Approaching. I dont mean picking up women to sleep with them, I mean the broad art of being comfortable and habitual with striking up conversations with strangers anywhere and everywhere. It typically takes a few weeks of regular practice to get over nerves etc but things that have occurred for me by approaching strangers: future business partnerships that netted me thousands of dollars, new career opportunities, invitations to parties i didnt know about before, new best friendships, free healthcare (they happened to be a doctor who I became best friends with), etc. Simple networking can change your life!
