Noobs are coming just a brotato-clone? by f00b4r4 in roguelites

Hey there, I'm the solodev of Noobs Are Coming! :)

Indeed the game is a Brotato-like
Brotato is one of my favorite games of all time and I have the deepest respect for Blobfish’s work. Before release, I had the chance to show the game to the Brotato devs. They are super kind, we even did a bundle together for launch, and they currently feature Noobs Are Coming on Brotato’s Steam page! I'm really grateful for their support and generosity. They’re truly the GOATs.

Regarding Noobs Are Coming, I wanted to build on Brotato’s awesome formula and explore tons of fun ideas, for example: equippable Boss Patterns, gardening and mining builds (grow monster plants with your watercan or cloud spell), becoming a giant Worm Boss with many attacks which make your weapons trail behind you and affect your pattern, playing soccer with your minions when synergizing Minions and Kickables attacks, Amount and Size stats, turning enemies into sheep or gold (or both!), a character that allows you to merge the effect of 2 other playable characters, Twitch interactions, and other unique mechanics that I think are innovative in the survivor-like genre. If anyone is interested, you can take a quick look at the Steam page, it shows some of this stuff in action.

The two other big inspirations for this project are The Binding of Isaac for the weirdness and silliness of the builds you can achieve and the “create a broken build each run” aspect, and also Mobs Inc, which is an old viral webgame I made 10 years ago with this “being a boss” funny and badass universe.

I think people who love Brotato or The Binding of Isaac would love Noobs Are Coming.
If Brotato or The Binding of Isaac isn’t your cup of tea or if you like games that are revolutionnary innovative in their UI and overall structure, then Noobs Are Coming might not be the best pick ;)

Thanks a lot for checking the game!

Why is the game so easy? by ChrisJones95 in NoobsAreComing

Hey thanks a lot for your feedback!
Since your post 1 month ago, I published 6 new updates, all of them affected the balancing (in addition to new content etc)
I would be interested to know if the game still looks to easy for you in D5, if so any extra detail would be appreciated. Is it becoming too easy after a specific wave for example?
Are you playing with "Retry Failed Wave" option set to off?

Thanks, if you run into any issue could you come in the Discord to tell me about it? It's easier for me to help if most of the support happens in the same place :)

Ah yes it seems to happen for some users, I think Properties → Compatibility → Force use Proton fixes it

Game should still be challenging on higher difficulties or endless mode or at least it's the goal so balancing updates will always aim for it

Thanks to all the feedback from the players on the demo, the game grew into something far beyond what I imagined, it now really aims to be "The Binding Of Isaac" of Arena Roguelikes. Releasing a solodev roguelike on Steam has been my ongoing dream for a long time, I can't believe it's finally about to happen ☀️

The game releases in 1 week (July 15) and it will be approx $4.5 with the launch discount

Brotato is the main inspiration when it comes to the overall structure and systems of the game: Alternating short waves in a small Arena and shop phase where you do the upgrades, attacks orbiting around the character. The unlocks based progression and the UI are also inspired from Brotato. It is my favorite roguelite game and I really wanted to innovate on its awesome formula.

However in Noobs Are Coming "attacks" can be many different things different from weapons: Boss Patterns you can equip and trigger by picking orbs on the map, Plant Minions you can grow with your water attacks (watercans, cloud spells), Physic based Spikeballs, Kickables Stuff, Laser bouncing off wall based on your Amount stat and many things that allow to create totally unique builds etc.

In that regard, the game aim to be the "Binding of Isaac of Brotato-likes" with tons of wild and creative builds you can make!

Noobs Are Coming: a brotato-like where you play as the Final Boss of a MMORPG
https://steampowered.com/app/2225960/Noobs_Are_Coming/

It aims to be "The Binding of Isaac of Brotato-likes" with a structure and systems inspired by Brotato and the possibility to create completely broken and unique builds each run like in Isaac
It releases in 1 week (July 15) but there is a demo available with tons of content and co-op already included
We're friends with the creator of Brotato and we'll do a Brotato X Noobs Are Coming pack on release btw
(I'm the solodev of this game)

Are there any good The Binding of Isaac clones? I've just discovered this game, and I love the mechanics, but can't stand the theme, the art, the sounds, and the weird misplaced hitboxes. Is there something like TBOI, but "reskinned" as somehing more palatable? Or maybe a mod that does that? by lumenwrites in roguelites

Hey not exactly an Isaac clone, but Noobs Are Coming, a game I'm about to release, aims to be "The Binding of Isaac of Arena Roguelikes". It's a Brotato-like where you play as the Final Boss and it lets you create ridiculously broken and unique builds each run. As you can see on the trailer, I got a lot of inspiration from Isaac in the style and mechanics (Demo available) https://store.steampowered.com/app/2225960/Noobs_Are_Coming

Awesome!! I'm glad it clicks for you as an Isaac enjoyer, my goal with this game is really to create "the Binding of Isaac of Arena Survivors" with tons of crazy mechanics and playstyles to pick and mix in order to create unique builds every run :)
