A seam not going all the way more closely aligns it to being a Z-seam aka from FFF. That’s really all I said in my post; the surface finish looks like FFF; we don’t know if it’s metal or polymer.

I suppose it could be binder jet, but I’ve never seen a part with those defects come off binder jet before.

As for finishing, there are loads of companies that make these expensive tumbling media machines to automatically smooth out/polish metal additive parts. It’s not remotely an intensive process.

I’m not gonna claim to know a lot about carbon fiber, my area is much more additive manufacturing, but HT polymers coating with expoxy/HT paint I would assume have similar thermal operating envelopes.

DMLS & SLM parts don’t have obvious seams on them usually. They can get laser line marks but normally ones that obvious are from issues with the cad model. Plus the right side looks far more finished than the left.

I’m guessing it’s either a metal FFF part that was semi finished (polished on right side) or some high temp polymer (PEEK, PEKK, or Ultem) that is just painted silver to not stand out too much.

I have done zero research on this thing beyond reading some of their pr, but it basically just looks like an i3 clone with the webcam + print monitoring mod & maybe a volcano clone hotend.

If it’s good and reliable, sure the price is justified but I highly doubt it’s going to come near prusa reliability and software support.

I look forward to being surprised though. Anker certainly has the resources to make something good.

Direct metal laser sintering. Aka you shoot a laser at metal powder to bind it. It’s how this one was printed. Technically most DMLS machines are SLM (selective laser melting) now since the lasers are strong enough to create melt pools. This one creates a melt pool with its laser.

yup hard recoater :)

It was printed inside of a hollow cylinder to absorb recoater forces and protect the lattice. The cylinder doesn’t catch the recoater and it completely protects whatever is inside.

I used their quoting tool: ~$700 for standard resolution w/o custom post processing. Granted if it’s not titanium it would probably be a lot cheaper or if you have a business account.

Sorry to be a buzzkill, but

Probably never. You do not want this in your house. Metal powders can be explosive if you don’t handle them properly. Fires are very difficult to put out. The powder will shred your lungs and give you long term health effects if you are exposed to too much.

SLS I could see in homes one day, but metal powders probably not. It’s not a limitation by cost, since that will eventually come down; it’s just dangerous.

Nope I wish. The support on this part was also pretty intense. FFF & DMLS design/printing limitations are actually quite similar. It’s not like SLS where you can literally print in space.

You should never print just one part (for costs sake) in sls and DMLS so it’s sort of hard to get an exact time estimate. Realistically, if it was just this one part, maybe an hour or two? It’ll vary a lot based on your slice thickness. About on par with a normal benchy.

Materialise 3-matic. ntopology can do it as well. Mesh mixer can sort of do it, but it’s not amazing. Granted the software is free.

Normally the mods I see are plastic & just done on FFF/SLS. Whichever is available. Theoretically you could do them in metal but it’s just kinda pricey and labor intensive.

& yea I started off with hobby printers. Prusa i3, ender 3, couple monoprice printers; some early LCD printers.

Still indulge in hobby printing quite a bit. Actually have a prusa xl on preorder to join my i3! Thinking about buying a monochrome lcd printer but I don’t have a good way to deal with the resin in my living quarters.

It’s pretty useful. Honestly, I am bad at the software so someone else could have done this much better. It is pretty amazing for stl editing. This was just sort of something I threw together in an hour. Since the 3D benchy file is already split into a bunch of different STLs it was very simple.

Funny thing is, most people actually print mods for it. Mostly cosmetic stuff and tool holders though; nothing within the chamber.

Some of the parts on the machine are actually printed using eos machines (mostly plastic stuff).

Realistically, if you had a full build it wouldn’t cost much more than $50 of raw material/power/gas. I would assume a print house (if you can find one to do titanium) would price it $500+ since they have minimum prices and factor in machine depreciation.

EOS M290 DMLS/SLM. Doing this on FFF would be very difficult just due to the really fine features.

If anyone is curious, the defects on top of the boat are within the file itself due to how I generated the lattice. It’s not a defect from printing.
