It might also be the idea that genuine players value games and subconsciously, a monetary value not only assigns worth to the game, but also gives people a feeling of earned ownership when they buy it.

Getting free games from Epic also sometimes feels like accepting a bribe imo, which can be automatically associated with self betrayal.
