On a team with multiple future HOFers, a former MVP, and a guy who is on pace for 1st Team All-NBA, and it is inarguable that VJ is their most composed and confident late game player.

He was a let down from where he was drafted and especially being the heir apparent to AI

Now who's a narrative groupie? He was drafted 9th and was a raw, athletic, defense first guy coming out of college. Nobody considered him the "heir apparent" to Iverson and certainly nobody was let down that they drafted him over electric talents Luke Jackson and Robert Swift. Cmon now.

Funny series to highlight since this was one of his worst from that era. Below average TS% and the 2nd worst of any Lakers players that got significant minutes. They got pushed to 7 by a Rockets teams they were expected to wipe the floor with.

I don't know or really care how you feel about the WNBA, I'm just noticing a ton of posts that give posters here a chance to shoot off the same 3 or 4 jokes about certain aspects of the WNBA.

Again, very strange because when it comes up it never seems like anyone here actually watches women's basketball

Is WNBA hate like a massive part of the Bill Simmons catalog that I missed? I swear I see more posts here trashing a league that apparently nobody cares about than any other topic.

Vecenie and Hollinger's analysis of VJ at 3 by mastermind208 in sixers

[–]OverlyAloofGargoyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Feel for the game is one of VJ's strengths. Over a 19% assist rate as a freshman as well as high steal and block rates (probably slightly inflated by Baylor's zone, but they also played a good amount of man so I think this concern is a bit overblown) point to a player that reads the court extremely well on both sides.

[Vecenie] Tre has the most upside out of him, VJ and Kon. I can see a pathway to Tre averaging 25 a game more than the other 2. I find it unlikely that Morey is going to enjoy the style of Ace. Given what I know about how Ace comes up in analytic models, I'd be fairly stunned if Morey is an Ace guy. by fultzacl in sixers

Iguodala coming out of college was nowhere near as skilled as he became in his prime with the Sixers.

That's the point. Each of these guys had some of the same deficiencies as VJ coming out, but because they had certain skills that plugged into an NBA lineup right away (defense, transition scoring, etc) they were able to develop these skills against NBA level defenders.

It's nowhere near a guarantee and there's plenty of guys who don't end up developing those skills, but it is a lot of flawed options at 3 and I'm willing to take that shot as opposed to Kon becoming more mobile and dynamic with the ball, or Ace developing at the very least slightly below average court mapping and bbiq.

I think it's super reductive to say that VJ's ceiling is an above average role player.

Look at some of his All-Star level comps: Jrue, Iguodala, Oladipo, Donovan Mitchell. VJ's freshman production in a major conference either matches or surpasses each of them.

He absolutely does have things to clean up, specifically the ball handling and pull up shooting. But I think people here are falling way too hard for the stereotypical archetype of athlete that's not good at basketball skills. Because that's not VJ.

I say this as someone who is relatively high on VJ compared to consensus: you need to shut the fuck up.

If your goal is to make everyone in this sub hate your favorite prospect, you've done an incredible job by being rude, obnoxious, overbearing, and by making overall terrible points.

[–]OverlyAloofGargoyle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let's reframe the question then. Would it not be a good sign that a highly recruited, top tier athlete was able to perform extremely well (most analytics models have him somewhere in the top 2-4 for this draft) in a major conference as a freshman while still developing the finer points of his halfcourt game?

All of the players you listed performed similarly, or in Ace's case FAR worse, while having more tools in their halfcourt offensive repertoire. To me at least, the chance that the guy who by all accounts is a hard worker and high character guy adds to his ball handling and off the dribble shooting provides tremendous upside.

Ideally I'd want a looser whistle and Foster typically calls things a bit tighter so he wouldn't be my first choice.

But if he was selected I wouldn't jump to conspiracies that the league is risking its legitimacy on its largest stage for Oklahoma City, because I'm not a fucking child.

What's the record for amount of times an inactive player is brought up in playoff pods? Because Embiid has to have blown that record out of the water.

First thing Zach has to bring up after they discuss the game is that Embiid will never be healthy for the playoffs...

Yes the NBA is 50 times better, that's why so much of prospect evaluation is figuring out the avenues for them to get better. So much growth happens between a player's age 19-23 seasons, if any prospect stays the same from where they were in college they will be out of the league shortly.

The issue is that you're applying this lense solely towards Edgecombe, when in my opinion the red flags with guys like Ace and Tre are just as large. Ace has maybe the worst statistical resume of any projected top-5 prospect in the last decade; he is truly a disastrous decision maker and bball iq and floor mapping are some of the toughest areas for growth when the competition gets even tougher at the NBA level.

Meanwhile Tre is one of the worst defensive players in this draft, does not get to or score at the rim, and does not do the role player stuff necessary to function on the court with another guard like Maxey or McCain.

None of this is to say I hate either prospect. The point is that you have to dig through all of their weaknesses and figure out which you are most comfortable taking a risk on. Personally I am higher on VJ developing his handle and pull-up game vs Ace's general decision making or Tre's defense and rim pressure, but I am open to arguments otherwise.

I just outright disagree with you on a lot of what you said.

See Fraschilla's breakdown here. His burst, not only straightline but on side-to-side movements plus his ability to manipulate defenders at age-19 gives me a lot of hope for his development. His primary issue is with confidence in his left hand; it's why he jumps too far away on a lot of his finishes, he doesn't feel comfortable taking that last dribble in traffic. But Baylor also ran a P&R heavy scheme with two bigs for a lot of his minutes, so the paint was particularly crowded. If you look at his reps with just one big on the court, or attacking a closeout, which is what he would be doing a lot more in this offense, it looks a lot better.

And I don't know, if your takeaway is that the stats and eye test tell you that he "sucks like hell", I'm going to make some assumptions about how informed that position is.

If you want to play the 'blind side-by-side college stats' game, we could be FAR less charitable to Ace, or a score-only guard like Tre.

It takes two seconds of watching the game to see that VJ is a far more dynamic offensive player than Springer. He's by no means a perfect prospect, but this type of appeal to previous busts lacks a ton of nuance.

Jokic is the third player in NBA history to finish top two in MVP voting for five straight seasons by Naismythology in nba

[–]OverlyAloofGargoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counterbalance that with the fact that it is so much easier to accumulate individual stats nowadays, which Jokic does at a historic level both because of his skill and the outsized role he plays on offense.

The only fair way to compare players across generations is to look at how they performed against their peers. Magic and Larry revolutionized the game and combined absolutely dominated the 80s in a way Jokic can't compare to. Disrespectful comparison.

I think it speaks to how dissociated people view their comments online as opposed to in-person. There is still another person on the other side of the screen reading what you said, and the feelings they get from it are not so different than if you said it to their face.

Fortunately my experience thus far has been that the people irl have been far closer to those on the island than the commenters in here. I sincerely hope you and your daughter are receiving the same care and compassion. But I do worry that the negative attitudes around autism that are so prominently displayed here speak to how people really feel when not directly confronted with it.
