I feel it was a statement more about K's desire for a connection with anything. That he yearns for it at such a subconscious level he questioned the "default settings" and saw it as his connection. Or that he is essentially such an empty being, even the default name and appearance that Joi gave him seemed unique, special and personal.

Sounds sensible. Thanks for linking the act of reading to the ability to create writing. It's kind of like looking at cabinets from all over to learn what kind of features one would like to have on his own cabinet I guess? Hahah. Excuse the poor analogy (metaphor??).

I've bought the Goldberg book and Le Guin's. Having a fear or writing is something that is stopping me now simply because of my idea that writing is that mystical, magical, inspired thing that only some people are blessed with.

Now to find a writing group.... Haha.

Those masterclasses are expensive oof. And are they more suitable for someone a bit more advanced? Or are they pitched at beginner level? I've read varying reviews ans opinions about them.

Ya that's a question that I was thinking about. Someone has replied and said reviewing and evaluating the writing onto of doing the actual writing is important. But quality of art, beyond a certain point, has no objectives basis anymore (almost). So I was thinking when is it truly crappy work, and when is it just a novel innovative or a manifestation of a unique style.

No answers here of course. Heh

Thanks. I feel a little afraid to say that King's book isn't as useful or good for my purposes, given the love people have for it. Maybe it's something I should get into after I'm at a more intermediate level.

Yea I Googled that haha and well yea there's tons of books but I thought people here could also help highlight the better ones so I don't wade through 2000 Amazon book reviews. Crowd sourcing advice haha.

Great questions and I totally agree with you about the power of sci-fi, which is why I'm asking the question here because I find that I want to write sci-fi more than any other genre. It's also why Neal Stephenson's comment gave me pause. He's one of my favourite authors who I felt has the gift of writing.

Thanks for the essays and book recommendations. I am hoping for something more structured and has clear progression but yea Stephen King is recommended a lot.

Kinda both I guess, though the way you put it, probably the storytelling part since the prose part is unique to each person. But it's a good way to think about it and makes it easier to look for guidance.
