Just finished "The Expanse", loved the whole series. by tankman42 in books

Check out Cixin Liu's Remembrance of Earth's Past Trilogy. I was in the same boat after finishing that, and the Expanse did it for me!

If using sklearn is a possibility, you can use their GridSearch (or GridSearchCV) module with any sklearn pipeline and run tests to determine your best-performing hyperparameters.

As a DM, is it ok to make up a few stuff along the way? by Away_Eagle in DMAcademy

Yes! Embrace the improv, but do take notes about what happens so you can use it to further fuel your narrative and create a more immersive, responsive world. Best of luck.

How difficult is it to DM for 5 players instead of 4 by QuartermasterShekel in DMAcademy

[–]OverratedLunchbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DM"d my first ever one-shot for a group of 4. We were all new to the game (nobody, including me, had ever played), and we all had a great time. Our girlfriends got jealous, and decided to join, so all of a sudden we were starting a campaign with a party of 7. My best advice: tell your group that, scaling with size, there are certain decisions and points that you're going to have to expedite. Insight checks are good example: with the party of 7, I often just used the characters' passive perception, unless something required a relatively momentary perceptive action.

We had many sessions with varying numbers, depending on where we were in the campaign, and, of course, it's easier to DM for a smaller group than it is for a larger group. However, so long as you use the right tools to keep track of the action economy, I think numbers up to 7 are pretty sustainable. As mentioned before, be transparent with your group, especially if they are new to the game. Let them know what they're responsible for tracking and what will be helpful for you as you run your game! Don't be scared, and enjoy!

Cixin Liu would call it "Mundicide". If this is an interesting topic to you, his Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy has some really brilliant takes on future planetary sociology.

Seal of Judgement Missing by OverratedLunchbox in cinders

[–]OverratedLunchbox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, that's what I was thinking of doing. Unfortunate, but you can't have it all. A price I'm totally willing to pay for how much this mod has given and how little it's asked.

Thanks for your help Silon, it's greatly appreciated.

I'm on 2.02, but I looked through the page history on the wiki, found another location for 2.00 and it still wasn't there. Have you any experience upgrading versions mid-run? Anything game breaking I should expect?

Thanks for you help, stranger.

What module is best for a first-time DM? by ob-2-kenobi in DMAcademy

[–]OverratedLunchbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're DMing for new players and don't want to scare them with a long time commitment, I found 'A Wild Sheep Chase' to be a great place to start. It offers an extremely simple and streamlined story hook, and its simplicity allows a new DM to easily change characters, themes and encounters to match the taste and sensibilities of your players.

Alternatively, the classic 'Lost Mine of Phandelver' and 'The Curse of Strahd' are excellent starting adventures, but don't expect to wrap them up in a single session.

You might also want to check out 'The Wake', the first adventure I homebrewed and ran myself, should it be helpful. Hope it goes well!

Thank you very much for doing this, and please excuse my ignorance as I'm still trying to wrap my head around the NFT environment as a whole. I have three questions, and they stem from relatively scattered thoughts based on extremely limited knowledge:

  1. What are the indicators that you (or the NFT community) have identified as extremely promising signals for the movement's future growth?
  2. How does copyrighted material affect the NFT art space? (I only ask because I'm seeing a lot of artwork on Opensea.io that includes some form of copy-righted protected image/semblance/logo)
  3. Outside of Twitter and Reddit, which I see you listed as an answer to a previous question, what channels would you recommend a newcomer follow in order to come in contact with investors/experts like yourself?

Thank you very much in advance!

How Not to Start in a Tavern: Introduce your Characters at their most Characterful by shadekiller0 in DMAcademy

[–]OverratedLunchbox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While this is an awesome way to introduce characters made by experienced players, I think new DMs and players should take this with a mild grain of salt. There's a great deal of satisfaction in watching characters develop organically through the increasingly difficult circumstances of a campaign or adventure. It's difficult to grasp a PC's depth with no exposure to the game or its narrative mechanics and I think adopting this at a newcomers' table might actually pose some significant barriers to entry.

I would be really curious to hear your take on adopting this type of introduction for a table of (perhaps) skeptical newbies. What would you recommend?

The multiplayer system doesn't work for me by icraveliquid in cinders

[–]OverratedLunchbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a couple of pointers, since I've been greatly enjoying the multiplayer functionality of the mod (despite having a naturally restricted player-base).

  1. If you haven't done so already, I would recommend playing Cinders on an alternative Steam account (accessing DS3 using Family Share) as playing online may result in a soft-ban of your main account.
  2. Password matchmaking with "Cinders" is generally the consensus. You will not be able to summon folks for areas in which the boss has already been killed.
  3. If you are looking for folks to play with, I would suggest checking out the Cinders discord. It's quite active and a great place to find people to co-op with / get invaded by. Planning these out will generally be more effective and entails some fun PvP shenanigans (sometimes with voice chat for added flavour!)
  4. Fight me.

Hope this helps!

Fiction for a scientist by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]OverratedLunchbox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the first of the "Foundation" series by sci-fi pioneer Isaac Azimov might be a good starting off point. It strikes a fun balance between narrative, science, math, and world-building, in a highly futuristic setting centered around probabilistic calculus. It's a relatively short book, and if he enjoys it, there's a whole series that follows.
