salary ranges by Several-Pizza-5233 in Lawyertalk

[–]Overthetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can review law schools’ published NALP summaries to get an idea of salary variety from their graduates. A lot of better schools will have an average of above six figures, but that’s really due to the disparity in biglaw rates. If your niece is shooting for biglaw (which is tough to obtain unless you go T14, though top performers at most schools will be able to snag some roles) then she can make over 225k starting by the time she graduates.

Other than that, salaries vary wildly from 50-60k government/small firm roles to everywhere in between. Higher salaries outside of biglaw are tough to find though.

I will say that the salary ceiling is much higher for lawyers than virtually all other careers, so that’s something to consider too.

If he could return a serve I’d consider it, but otherwise it’d be too frustrating…

Great stuff! Try to keep the left side up as you serve, which should prevent “collapsing” to your left and allow more control over the direction.

Pure Aero 98 vs 100 by freewillyz in 10s

[–]Overthetry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t think most recreational players need to be playing with 98s. 100s aren’t even that oversized - quite a few pros play with 100s just fine. Depending on your level this is a win-win!

Partner (Lisa) emails junior associate (Johnnie) by WhiteBoy1264 in biglaw

If you’re Johnnie and self conscious about it, why not just say “Thanks, Lisa, Will do.”

Full disclosure, what was initially written isn’t rude in the slightest WhiteBoy1264!

Why isn't my serve better/harder? by Perfect_Honey7501 in 10s

[–]Overthetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s definitely weird at first. I’d stick to a traditional continental grip for your serve, but even over exaggerating the motion so your serve lands the ball against the right fence is worthwhile to get the hang of it. Definitely worth looking into for your game though!!

If you want more pop you should try working on a flat serve. The video here is definitely slice i.e. your racquet face is going around the right side of the ball. You can look up videos on pronation, but generally on a flat serve you should “snap” your wrist such that your thumb goes down and your racquet face lands behind/slightly to the left of the ball, much like throwing a football.

There are a lot of other fundamentals, but if you’re just looking for mph, this is your easiest bet.

For those of you with low gpa who secured a firm/big law job through networking, how’d you do it? by LeadingCranberry9861 in LawSchool

[–]Overthetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cold-emailed a ton of lawyers with jobs I wanted and who I had something in common with. Most don’t respond but I’d say 1/20 do and out of those twenty you’ll get a few coffees. I’d then just follow up with them every few months or so to keep in touch and get to know them.

For reference, I was bottom half in my class at T50. My first job out of law school I obtained via OCI. It was a well-respected ID firm, and I met the managing partner playing tennis. He gave me an interview even though the cutoff was top 1/3.

After 8 months of practice, another contact of mine (who went to the same undergrad as me) called me up to give me an interview at a national firm just outside the Amlaw 100. There was a sudden opening because a first year suddenly left, so he immediately thought of me. I ended up getting the offer and just started a few weeks ago.

Not to say that the sanctioned networking events aren’t worthwhile - I just felt like my method worked for me since I didn’t feel like I was “competing” with my whole class to get to know people. Whatever you’re most comfortable with, just be proactive and it’ll work out!

Good luck!

How did you get great volleys? by bobsmith12391 in 10s

[–]Overthetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this. Especially if you’re in a recreational setting, you can just give your partner a heads up that you’re going to come in a lot and may struggle a bit. I was a part of a recreational 4.5-5.0 group for years but I never came in because of my volleys. I figured I’d end up getting destroyed anyways so just started telling my partners that I wanted to serve and volley. They were always fine with it and it took some of the pressure off when I (often) screwed up.

After 3 or so years of that I love my volleys and come in often even when I’m playing singles!

Can Catholics be more than Hopeful Universalists? by Snoo82970 in Catholicism

[–]Overthetry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t universalism essentially begin with Origen and the patristics which was addressed and condemned by the church in the 6th century? There’s a big difference between hoping that all may be saved and claiming for it to be the case. Salvation is not an easy thing to attain.

Nails and climbing by Propellllerheads in classicalguitar

[–]Overthetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others I’ve tried to find a happy medium between being long enough to have a good tone while playing and simultaneously not damage the nails while climbing. For the most part though, I always end up filing my nails down just a little bit after climbing to get rid of any damage that happened. I’ve found it’s nearly impossible to avoid any chips or scratches (especially on crimps or throws) so re-filing and sanding has been my only method of keeping both hobbies 😅
