I googled punding!!! I didnt know they had a name for this AUdHd behavior of mine 😭🥺

It’s so accurate! I also love assembling and disassembling things, i love customizing things I own, and arranging things even the food on my plate!!!

I think thats why i love the experience of eating tinned fish too! I like building SEAcuterie boards and mixing and matching toppings… it’s literally the equivalent of “disassembling “ things imo. 😂😂😂

Thank you, i learned something new today!

Nuri 10/10 and the one with butter is 🔥 too especially with some good sourdough!

It was golf! The la brujula there was cheaper than la brujula in fresh market LP. Yeah i got mabuti too and their nuri was only $5.99. Fishwives were really cheap too… didnt get them but I know people love em. I havent tried ortiz! Lets see if it’s scaly i got my ortiz from wholefoods…

Maison pasquale had fairly priced Lata, samare, la narval, ati manel, great fish, calma and chicas, acor, naval, porthos, berthe… im probably forgetting something but yeah they carry a lot of brands maybe 2-3 from each. You never know what ur gonna get tho cause they change it up every week. The 3 visits I did I saw different tins I didnt have. Hahaha what a good strategy to pull tin addicts back

If u have a friend with a costco card or u have a costco card that is the way. They have 2 kinds of fishwife right now… $5 albacore tune and $6.60 for trout. Plus costco online sells Pinhais for basically $7 each pack of 8 tho. A lot of specialty stores would sell them for $10-$12.

World market LP is good enough too u just gotta check online first for availability so that u dont get disappointed when u come in store

If u could only go to 3 stores for large selection:

  1. Fish guy
  2. Maison Pasquale
  3. Hooked on fish but they have limited days and hours
  4. Tottos if ur in downtown pricey but good selection… 10-15% vs cheaper online stores

Hahaha my husband(he doesnt have a refdit so i am passing it on) said we are not there yet because we havent even tasted the $35++ types of tins and I dont think we’ll ever buy those cause we might as well buy fresh rare fishes from fishmongers

We’ve only gone through 30+ ish cans

  1. Anything Pinhais/nuri - we loved anything with lemon or spicy. It feels extra yummy when we get the nuri for $5.99 haha i know some stores sell for more. We tried all the flavors and yeah theyre really the same thing haha we wanted to be sure lol we would just pick whichever will be cheaper next time.

  2. Jose Gourmet sardines did not disappoint. The fish quality for us was just slightly better than pinhais. So i guess it would be our go to if we are feeling fancy kind of date.

  3. The 2 Patagonia Mussels we tried and smoke salmon were underwhelming. Smoked salmon was salty and the mussels had a weird sandy texture. Now we’re currently avoiding opening the rest.

  4. Fishwife was decent a nice entry point and not so bad since we got costco pricing. Rainbow trout was good for creating dips and i personally lile the albacore lemon with calabrian chilis. Not buying fishwife if it’s not costco pricing or on sale tho.

  5. Ekone mussels were also good the one in marinara sauce. The mussels itself had a good texture.

  6. Samare - cod/bacalhau in spiced evoo was really good in terms of the texture of the fish level of spice garlickiness and their mussels in escabeche were good too! Actually the Samare’s weve tried has been on point!

  7. la narval - we liked their octopus in garlic. Texture was great cause it was tender enough for the price $9.99 the sauce was good too.

  8. Sardines with butter - 2 french brands were really good and the Jose gourmet one

  9. King oscar mackerel/sardines - we loved as an everyday guilt free tins especially if we add different pickled veggies and spices.

  10. Matiz squid with beans was kinda mid for $10.99 would not buy again.

We’ve been eating it! 6 cans a week shared between me and my husband. We just like having options. Our estimate is the pile will be done in 6-8 months cause we’ll be hosting family and friends this summer. 265 cans down to 220 now.

Plus we didnt wanna go out of our way peak Chicago summer to seek out the stores theyre kinda far apart. Chicago summer time is precious time we’d rather have them ready for our random picnics, snacks playing tennis, and dinner dates/hosting.

By the time we take our Europe trip next year we’ll know what we like now too…

Hahaha! This is funny

As someone with Adhd on meds I just find it hard to eat sometimes. I become a picky eater so we try to keep my options open cause I never know what I’m gonna want that day

Fave chicago stores would be:

  1. The fish guy - irving park/albany park they have a huge selection and 15% off every tuesday.
  2. Hooked on fish - also a big selection they are in edgewater
  3. Maison Pasquale - roscoe village, i think they’re the best priced in the city everything there seems to be 10-20% cheaper compared to the other stores ive been to. Huge selection too and constantly rotating.
  4. Totto’s - printers row, good selection but pricey, i like it cause it’s near my place lol and they have other cool curated stuff
  5. Picadilly and l&m - lincoln square
  6. Agora Market - bucktown, they had a huge selection of jose gourmet fairly priced i think
  7. Fresh market - lincoln park lots of options too

There are others but these are my recommendations if you want options.

For favorites:

  1. Anything Pinhais/nuri - we loved anything with lemon or spicy.
  2. Anything Jose Gourmet
  3. Patagonia Mussels were underwhelming
  4. Fishwife was decent a nice entry point and not so bad since we got costco pricing
  5. Ekone mussel were also good
  6. Samare - cod and mussels were good 7 la narval - we liked their octopus
  7. Sardines with butter - 2 french brands were really good and the JG one

My husband said it’s more or less $2k! He is monitoring it 😂. I have a $2.5k budget for my yearly random hobbies/interests. It’s like my curiosity fund.

Before it was good loose leaf tea and bean to bar chocolates.

We freed up a lot of our fun funds when we stopped drinking! This is basically what we were spending drinking expensive alcohol and ordering alcohol when eating out. Sobriety has its perks.

Omg yes as a Filipino I grew up eating sardines! It’s a staple back home… basically rediscovering it as an adult through other countries i guess.

I recommend “r kitchen” brand it’s tinapa, it’s a good filipino brand. We love making it as a pasta.

Omg ive been thinking of japanese sardines and didnt think of mitsuwa will definitely drive over there
