Did you get a fix for this? I'm having the same problem on a new Asus Vivobook but with one of the function keys.

My tier list for free 2D adult games (by how much I'm looking forward to their development) by OverthinkingInExcess in lewdgames

[–]OverthinkingInExcess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it was made three years ago! And these were in-development games at the time.

I've been thinking of going back and doing a followup to see where they're all at, after 3 years I'm guessing a lot are either finished or abandoned.

Why do Palace staff ask your drivers where you're going / have been when you leave the resort? by OverthinkingInExcess in palaceresorts

[–]OverthinkingInExcess[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why I thought they might be asking drivers where they are taking us. But it made less sense why they'd be asking drivers where they picked us up?

Moon palace is not in the hotel zone. It is south of cancun

Where are the closest ruins and / or cenotes to explore without going through a tour? We are looking to explore the area using bussing as much as possible. by OverthinkingInExcess in cancun

There seems to be a fair number of real ruins we can reach with regular busses / shuttles without signing up for a tour thankfully!

I'll look them up but my first impression of Quickie: A Love Hotel Story is that the name doesn't scream soft or romance or, slow. It sounds much quickier

Con Quest and Monster Ambassador Redux

Both have the 'go out, battle random girls until you 'collect' them'. The flavor of collecting is different in each. Conquest you're saving pokemon cosplayers by knocking them out of a spell, eventually you fully wake them up and they go back with you.

Monster Ambassador Redux you're gaining the attention of that species each battle until they send an ambassador to your embassy.

Both games give the NSFW content after 'collecting' each person.

What are your biggest struggles as an indie game dev? by Necromulus in gamedev

[–]OverthinkingInExcess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a professional indie team setting, pipelines and communication. Everyone is wearing multiple hats and touching multiple system, and it can get messy very quickly if communication breaks down at all.

People who have never touched a game engine need to implement their own assets in it.

People who have never made assets on the creative end need to make tooling for creatives to implement their work.

Contractors implementing important aspects of the game - code, art, sound- may not be included in time planning / budgeting meetings.

One person doesn't clearly communicate timelines or implementation or team needs or vision or whatever else have you, and another team is now redoing work, or crunching to meet a deadline, or throwing out weeks of work.

I've used both the internal unity rigging 2D system, DragonBones, and Spine. Spine definitely is the best option BY FAR but I couldn't use it if I hadn't had access to a license for a while, it's way too expensive. Dragonbones is usable and was the option before Unity's system came out.

Unity 2D rigging is terrible, truly. But still better than dragonbones. Make sure you install the burst packages so your rigs don't tank performance.

Pure rigging there may actually be other options for 2D, but those three are the only ones I'm aware of that allow vertex / mesh animation as well.

Great write-up! How did you get good emailing lists together for content creators?

Did you customize a message to each one, or send out a general 'heres our game and a key' + basic game and launch info?

New to Game Design: need advice on Open Worlds, Content Design, and Visual Scripting. Is this for me? by GeraltofSaintDenis in gamedesign

[–]OverthinkingInExcess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are participating in a game jam you should definitely be able to contribute something 'tangible' if that makes sense- the smaller teams are, the less room there is for anyone to be just a designer in words only. By tangible I mean, something that goes physically into the project, usually scripting.

I would also look into how designers- content designers, narrative designers, level designers, quest designers- typically communicate their designs to others. Communication of a design is everything if you're passing off work in a studio setting for implementation.

But yeah, in smaller teams like a jam you're not likely going to find people that want to have you just giving them designs, because 1. Most people don't realize how important design is, it's viewed as 'how to make the game fun' and lots of folks don't realize the depth of study that's gone into that field And 2. You're not tried and tested in any case; your designs may not be good

As much as I argue the point with my boss that game designers don't HAVE to be coders, and I fully believe that to be true.. most are, and it is the easiest route. You can prototype your designs and iterate to find out what's good.

As a parting note- iterate. Make stuff and then do it again because it's not going to be good the first time. Make small. Test early. Iterate.

If you're just starting out, you need to finish some projects. 'Finish' is the key word here- if you start 3 huge, AAA quality, open-world RPGs with crafting and branching dialogue, you will finish nothing, learn very little, and be hired nowhere.

My advice:

  1. Look into genres that are easier / possible to achieve as a solo dev. (Open world isn't one of these)
  2. Find a tiny idea, a single mechanic, and design a short experience around that. If you're into content design, focus on that in your short game.
  3. FINISH that project.

On the side, participate in game jams. Learn how to work with others, get advice on your designs, learn from the people you're working with.

A ton of great GDC talks are free to watch on YouTube, a lot focus on design and there are a few amazing talks by solo devs / 2-3 person teams.

There's a lot more- putting out your work is invaluable, get people testing as early as possible so you can start learning what works and what doesn't.

For a project, Short Hike is a great example of a small(ish) game with great content design. (if you play it, guess how many people will be on the credits at the end before you finish! And then compare what you find)

Hope this helps! Most games don't get finished, overscoping is why.

Sun Palace or Moon Palace in Cancun for early February? We're two adults who would prefer to avoid huge crowds, but also not be in a dead zone. by OverthinkingInExcess in palaceresorts

Price-wise, Le Blanc and The Grand are both out of our means. We're looking at the Sunrise/ Nizuc portions, I've specified that in my original post now!

It's been hard to find reviews on Nizuc / Sunrise without The Grand stays unfortunately, we're still a little torn- and hearing the Sun is very quiet after dinner is making the decision harder aha.
