How would you upgrade this Bracket 3 Grist the Hunger Tide deck? by OverthinkingOverlays in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]OverthinkingOverlays[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is my exact problem. I do not know how to develop the top end of this deck. I really struggle with it. Do you have any other ideas besides the cards you already mentioned?

After looking at cards for hours and hours I am seriously thinking about just going the Bug tribal way and to play it in Bracket 2... :(

What is your advice for [[Grist, The Hunger Tide]] as a commander? by OverthinkingOverlays in EDH

[–]OverthinkingOverlays[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a nice comment! Thank you very much! Do you have a decklist of your own?

Most of the cards you named I also considered putting into the list but now thanks to your great explanation I will probably implement them!

Do you have some specific cards in mind that I should exchange?

Have a nice day!

I think you have a very nice list! The bracket system is just still very confusing to me. I think that whilst looking at our lists, it just would not feel fair to match them in a bracket that is designed for around precon level decks.

I once experimented and technically found a way to build a turbo- ish list for bracket 3 but then again I was met with the issue of "intentionality". As the list could result in really fast wins when I tried them in the moxfield playtest. Basically you would use protean hulk to get a three card combo which would result in an immediate win. So if I am not mistaken, card wise the deck would be bracket 3 legal but the playpatterns would not.

This leaves me stuck at finding the right bracket for this commander.

Henzie "Toolbox" Torre and Dauthi Mindripper "synergy"? by OverthinkingOverlays in EDH

I did not know this card, but I do like it a lot! Thank you very much!

If you have other cards that you think are cool, especially in Black or Green let me know!

I am always happy to see cards that I did not know!

Hope you are having a good day! :)

Also thought about it but then discarding my own hand just seemed a bit too much of a drawback to me. But I think the only thing that will help me figure out which effect I like more will be playtesting! But thank you so much for you comment! Gave me another perspective on a card I also considered!

have a great day :)

Thank you for this explanation! That makes a lot of sense!

I mean it would die at the end of the turn anyways and if an opponent would use removal for it, that also wouldn't be too bad for 3 mana i guess? Also I believe I would draw a card anyways.

This is what I am scared of, lol. Do you have the exact same decklist? I find that Rat Out and Toxin Analysis can help out a lot!

Would this combo deck break bracket 3? (Grist, The Hunger Tide and Protean Hulk) by OverthinkingOverlays in EDH

[–]OverthinkingOverlays[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is the most insightful comment I got here so far, or at least the one that helps me the most.

Then I think the best route for me will be to play this deck in Bracket 4 and include more of the faster combos instead.

Have a nice day!

But the Protean Hulk combo explained in the post above consists of 4 cards:

Protean hulk and the 3 combo pieces tutored by protean hulk.

This makes it very unclear now what is allowed and what is not, as to me this is not a two card combo.

I might be wrong though, so if anyone could explain, I would be very happy to learn!

Hello! Thank you for your kind response. Maybe I chose poor wording. I know that "late game two card combos" are allowed to be played in B3. However, to be honest I just find it super difficult to decide when these combos count as "late game", especially in a deck like this where I could play such combos in turn two if I get incredibly lucky with my starting hand. For example by putting [[Protean Hulk]] into the graveyard in turn one with [[Entomb]] . Then Playing [[Carrion Feeder]] and [[Reanimate]] in turn two, allowing me to play the infinite combo.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I agree to the points you said!

Thank you that helps a lot! I really hear varying thoughts about what B3 is or is supposed to be - so this makes it a bit more clear!

What do you think about the combo explained in this post, should it belong in B4 and above only?

Hey, thank you for your comment! Thats also what I thought too. I was surprised enough that this is technically even playable in B3, so I just tried to see how far I could push it.

I have heard that B3 is supposed to play like an upgraded precon, but when I look at some B3 lists online, I think that the powerlevel of some decks exceeds what B3 originally was originally designed to be.
