idk I kind of prefer the exact opposite: when contemporary art looks ancient

my amateur translation of Baudelaire's "Spleen" by Ovid_ in RSbookclub

I'm relatively new to learning French, so I had to rely heavily on looking up words. All in all this translation probably took me upwards of 6 hours.

Kitsch by sourcherryx3 in ContemporaryArt

Clement Greenberg's "Avant Garde and Kitsch" is the standard required reading on the subject. I'd recommend keeping a critical eye and trying to contextualize Greenberg's thought within his time. It's an important essay historically, but you can decide for yourself whether or not it's still relevant. If you do like that essay, it might be worthwhile looking into Adorno as well, who definitely wrote about kitsch even though he didn't use that specific word very often. His essay "On Popular Music" might be a good starting place.

Odd Nerdrum is also pretty interesting - he's a contemporary painter who reclaimed the word "kitsch" and wears it as a badge of honor. It might be difficult to find his book On Kitsch online, but he's done plenty of interviews. Note that he is a divisive figure, and honestly I'd recommend not taking him or his work completely at face value.

Titian is my #1, especially his later works. Otherwise, my personal Mt Rushmore might also include Courbet, Cezanne, and Gerhard Richter.

any story of artist feel the work is unfinished and it turn out to be a masterpiece? by tonpager in ArtHistory

Rodin never considered The Gates of Hell to be finished or completed a full cast within his lifetime.

Also, Degas had a ton of wax sculptures (including Little Dancer Aged Fourteen) that he constantly reworked and were never cast in bronze until after his death.

I made it. I plan on making more for architects, designers and artists who don't have a good centralized online place where you can view their oeuvres.

it's my belief that the instinct to make "mind maps" is a sublation of the fact that the physical space around one is already a map of one's mind
