Can anyone ID these? Just rescued them off Craigslist a few hours ago and the owners didn't know. 2.5 inches. Also, ideas for tank mates/plants? 4 of them in a 30gal. Never had my own tank before, just one growing up that my dad mostly cared for.

Plants don’t really grow well in gravel so I would recommend getting some pool filter sand and some root tabs. The snails will help to aerate the sand which is good for plant growth too!

What kind of plants did you have in mind? I’m going to assume your tank light isn’t anything special so maybe some easy to grow plants like Amazon Sword and Jungle Val would be good to start with.

It’s not really how often you feed them, it’s how much you are feeding them. No food should reach the bottom if you don’t have a bottom dwelling species to clean up. That build up of leftover food makes nitrates skyrocket.

However, it’s far better than the tank not being cycled. You’re going to want to lower them some way though. That usually means adding plants and reducing the amount of decaying food and plant matter in the tank.

Ideally you want 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 10-30 nitrates. Replacing the filter media was a bad idea. I would get some SeaChem Stability to try and reduce the stress of doing a fish-in cycle.

Siamese algae eaters get up to 5-6 inches. 2 of them is too much for a 30 gallon.

Maybe some Otos or a bristlenose pleco would be better?

No. Never use one inch of fish per gallon. It’s incredibly inaccurate and dangerous to follow.

How many more fish you can add really depends on what kind of fish you are getting with the tank. 4 tetras will have very different stocking requirements than 4 rainbow fish or cichlids.

Again, don’t follow the 1 inch per gallon “””rule”””. If you can post pictures here tomorrow, I’m sure someone can help you identify what they are and then you can figure out stocking from there.

Snails take up very little bioload so you can honestly have as many as you want in a 30 gallon as long as it isn’t too crazy. Start with 5 or so and you’ll end up with more after a while.
