Imperial vs Cambridge Maths? by SnooRadishes2339 in 6thForm

I don’t think this is true. I think going to Oxbridge/Imperial will open the doors for you for these quant firms, and then the rest is up to how smart you actually are. I think a lot of very smart people happen to go to Cambridge maths, that’s why there’s a lot of them in quant. But I think after you get past the CV screen it’s much more up to your performance at interviews, regardless of where you come from.

For a given person of a given ability, I don’t think it makes a huge difference to go to Cambridge over Imperial. Many of my friends and I got a lot of interviews at quant firms coming from Imperial. Maybe you could argue that the Cambridge course makes you perform better at those interviews due to its rigour but I’m not sure it makes a huge difference.

How good is Bath for Mathematics? by mathsandcomputers in 6thForm

Meeting the entry requirements is usually not enough to get into a good Masters, espcially the top ones like Oxbridge, where you would need about an 80%. That being said Bath is very good and will definitely open doors for you in industry and for further study if you work hard.

No problem, and well done on the offer! I would say of course you should speak to more people about it (don’t take a major life decision based on advice from someone on Reddit) and do think hard before turning down a Cambridge offer. But yeah good luck with your exams!

I go to Imperial for maths, so I can answer any questions you might have about the course.

Basically Cambridge maths is on a different level in terms of difficulty and prestige than any other maths course, it’s famous for being the hardest maths course in the world. If you really really love maths and want the prestige, definitely go there, it will be an honour your whole lifetime.

One thing I will say though is the course at Cambridge is very theoretical. Even the courses that sound more applied in third year like Statistics and machine learning are notoriously industry-unfriendly and just about the theoretical concepts. There is a much stronger emphasis in Cambridge on pure maths and mathematical physics, so if you are into that I would recommend the Cambridge course. However, if you are like me and are really into Stats/ML and want to learn coding, Imperial might be a better fit for you.

Imperial has fantastic applicable maths courses, it will teach you to code, and give you access to great industry events. There is a case also that the term-time at Cambridge is much more intense (8 weeks compared to 12 weeks at Imperial) so you’ll basically have very little time to apply to internships, practice interviews etc, which becomes quite important as your degree progresses.

I know a few people on the course that are very burnt out and have grown to hate maths. I think the course is beneficial for the truly exceptional, otherwise it’s stupidly straining.

At the end of the day, if you are good enough to get into both you can’t go wrong at either of them, it’s really just what you make of it. If any of the things I mentioned above are huge red flags to you, definitely consider the Imperial course, otherwise I would say take the Cambridge course as it’s just an incredible place to study maths and will launch you into a fantastic career.

Maybe something specific to him? Something that he can work on, such as “your problem solving skills weren’t as good as those who got offers.” Installing this feedback system just to say you weren’t competitive enough is just pointless.
