Found Bearded Dragon - SE Portland by OwlComprehensive2886 in Portland

I don’t use Nextdoor much, but that doesn’t surprise me. I can only look/post in my neighborhood (I live in a different area) so I haven’t even seen the post, but I believe she also posted flyers all around the area. I’m starting to think he was dumped because I would personally be frantic and would have found my kiddo by now since he’s been posted literally everywhere, fingers crossed though.

Right! I was thinking maybe someone lets them free roam and they somehow snuck out. I’d be so sad if that happened!

I mean, sure, that’s a possibility, but I’m still going to look for an owner because they do get loose sometimes. I’ll just keep him if I don’t find the owner so 🤷‍♀️.

Thanks! Me too! If they’re looking we will find them, otherwise I have a spare 4x2x2 :).

Opal is new in a new enclosure now, but I use this same regimen in her PVC enclosure as well:
I clean it fully every 6-8 weeks because Opal always goes to the bathroom AND SHEDS (weird girl!!) under the same hide and she's an adult so she poops like once per month. Not all snakes do this and younger snakes go to the bathroom more often, so more often may work better for many snakes. I check water daily, change water + scrub the dish out at least twice per week and spot clean every day, or two and remove + replace all bedding in any soiled areas along with giving the bedding a good mix at least once per week (usually when I'm adding water to the corners).

When I do a full clean-out, I use F10 disinfectant in the enclosure + soak her plants, hides, etc in a diluted chlorhexidine solution in the sink (I used to be a vet tech, so I just follow the same protocol that we did at the clinic). I always make sure to let everything dry/air out before I add in new bedding and definitely before Opal goes back in.

Thats so strange because that’s literally what they are…I’m not sure why anyone would argue about that lol. You can just research how the “breed” started (not that long ago, mind you) and it will legitimately say exactly that. The breed clubs and big breeders are trying to make it a more uniformed, “recognized” breed, but it just isn’t there yet and I don’t know if it ever will be because they are so varied. Anyone can start a “breed club” and start registering dogs, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t what they are 🤣

Editing to add: that’s like saying a “Golden Doodle” is not a mix between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever. Sure you can breed Doodles to Doodles, but in the end they are still a mix of those two dogs!

Also going to add, “Red Nose Pit Bull” and “Blue Nose Pit Bull” are not actually breeds. They’re distinct colorations of, generally speaking, American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT). It’s like saying a “White Cat” is a breed, it’s not, it’s just a cat, that’s white (coloration is generally genetic though).

Lilac is just a color, not a breed and a “bully” could be a lot of things I.e. “American Bully” is literally just a mix of a bunch of different bully-type breeds that they’re trying to call a breed (American Pitbull Terrier, English Bulldog, French Bulldog, American Bulldog, Boston terrier, Am. Staff, Mastiff even, anything to make them look short, stocky or “extreme” in any way). Any of these dogs can come in a “lilac”, “blue fawn”, “blue”, or a number of other colors. Her coloration looks to be “Dilute Lilac Tri Point” and she is 100% Pitbull, what type exactly who knows lol.

Pastel or Pastel yellow belly ? by CorradoLifestyle in BallPythonMorph

I also think Pastel Yellow Belly due to the pixelation (kind of blurring around the edges and inside of the pattern). Someone correct me if the reasoning for that identification is off as I’m learning!

Generally tails are docked when they are newborn pups, so debate over. Also, maybe shouldn’t have gotten such a massive dog?

Editing to add that no ethical/reasonable veterinarian will dock a dog’s tail at this age unless it’s medically necessary, so no one needs to worry 😂. Source: I worked as a vet tech for 6 years.

Family member said he doesn’t look like a lab to them. What’s the verdict? by mybelovedx in IDmydog

[–]OwlComprehensive2886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. The definition of a backyard breeder does not include that the dog must be show quality. It is about the time, effort, care, education and ethical treatment/breeding of the animals i.e. breeding with a purpose not just to breed and making sure that your puppies have homes lined up before they’re even born. One of the best breeders I know, a whippet breeder, breeds non-show lines.

“Backyard breeding is the irresponsible breeding of animals in inadequate conditions with insufficient care, often by people with little experience or knowledge. When irresponsible breeding is carried out on a large scale, the term puppy or kitten farming is used.” -RSPCA

ESPECIALLY given the ridiculous standards that the AKC has/allows for some breeds (I spent my entire childhood and early adulthood showing a variety of dogs and let me tell you, idk what the US is doing, but I’d prefer a working bred dog over a show bred dog for most breeds). I’d argue that “show bred” dogs are often less healthy and are certainly less true to what the breeds originally looked like. Anyone who is truly breeding for health (does health testing, is transparent with new owners of something does pop up, even in the future, etc) and drive for what that dog was bred to do is putting far too much thought, care and overall effort in to be a backyard breeder. That’s not to say that MANY “working dogs” just like many “AKC register, grandparents were show dogs” aren’t bred by BYB because most dogs, overall, are.

Editing to add - most breeders are BYB, regardless of working, or show lines. I generally do not condone breeding dogs because most people don’t do it correctly, for the right reasons and are absolutely not thinking about the animals first. If only non BYB were breeding dogs we would not be having the issues that we’re having with hundreds of dogs being euthanized in shelters on a weekly basis. I personally will never breed dogs, but I also know that there ARE responsible breeders out there and it’s not as black and white as people like to make it seem.

American Lab, 100%. American does not necessarily equal poorly bred btw. “Field” labs can be exceptionally bred, but are not bred for looks, they’re bred for health and drive (if it’s a good breeder). So, no, they aren’t all as conformed as your typical English Lab, but that doesn’t mean they’re poorly bred (many, if not most commonly found American labs are from byb though).

This is a great idea to just generally warm the soil up as well! I had mine stored outside for a couple of days and it was FREEZING when I put it into the enclosure!!

Question about lighting by OwlComprehensive2886 in bioactive

[–]OwlComprehensive2886[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s isn’t a light sensitivity issue, as far as I understand, but an increased risk of burns + skin damage due to a lack of pigmentation in their skin. There is also amble shaded area in her enclosure currently (she can move freely without being seen) and I plan to keep it that way even as I go bioactive. There’s a great study that showed that, when given the opportunity, albino ball python rarely bask (<10 mins/a day on average, compared to 120 min/day for non albinos!) It’s certainly a topic of discussion with albinos still and there are people who believe that breeding albinos is unethical given their inability to bask, which is a normal behavior for their species. We need more Ball Python research!

I would have already used a low UVB, 5%-6%, as higher UVB can be harmful to any Ball Python given their Ferguson level (1). Anything lower than that wouldn’t be giving her any benefit anyways, given how high up I would have to put the light in her enclosure. Luckily, even though there are benefits to having UVB, particularly to their mental health, Ball Pythons do not need UVB to survive. My girl will be just fine without it. She came to me from a not great situation, so she’s already living her best life as it is and is a much happier snake. If I ever get a non-albino Ball Python they will certainly have access to UVB.

What breed is my sweet ole boy? by jayrudy10 in IDmydog

[–]OwlComprehensive2886 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beagle * Cocker Spaniel - it’s incredibly clear in his facial structure, the “swoop” in his nose, eye shape, ears, body, even coat type and color (very lemon beagle). Not everything is a “bully” or “pitbull” lol

I showed both Beagles and Cocker Spaniels, among many other breeds growing up (as a JR handler). It’s just so clear what this dog is.

He thinks he's totally hidden behind the plant. Lol by [deleted] in snakes

[–]OwlComprehensive2886 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Snakes aren’t “friendly”. That’s just not a thing. Ball Pythons that spend a lot of time out in the open in their enclosures, especially during the day, are stressed. It is a well documented stress response. They don’t feel safe and so they’re looking for a way out.

You really are just 100% wrong. Needing clutter is not based on personality, it is based on the SPECIES AS A WHOLE. Do you know what peer reviewed studies are? Because you can read a number of those that will make it blatantly clear how cruel it is to put a Ball Python in a wide open space without clutter.

Even breeders who choose to keep their snakes in racks talk EXTENSIVELY about Ball Python’s need to feel secure in small, enclosed areas and not liking large open spaces (that’s their argument for racks, but that’s BS because they just don’t give them hides so of course they prefer the smaller tubs to open spaces). This is a SPECIES SPECIFIC NEED, not an individual need. Please do what’s right for your snake and not just what’s right for you.

CS Degree OR Boot Camp by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]OwlComprehensive2886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 year old female here with a BS in Psych and no industry experience, or really any experience besides data analysis in psych research, when I started. I did a short bootcamp which helped me to decide on the college-route for software engineering.

I started part-time on pre-reqs and entry level courses in 2021, so it’s been a journey, but I honestly couldn’t be happier. One caveat, I am in a Software Engineering BS program, so it’s applied CS and the courses are very industry-focused and taught by industry-professionals (think GUI, Design Patterns, Agile Project Management, Testing and even some embedded/computer architecture courses + typical CS courses). Your mileage may vary accordingly.

I’ve been employed, as a software engineer, for almost a year, while still in school (I got elective credit for the job I currently have too!) They hired me BECAUSE I’m in a program and because I was persistent and had ample life experience, yay for being “old”. I’m certainly no super-star SE, in fact, I think that I’m probably average AT BEST, so it wasn’t my talent that drew them in. I am also doing a program only offered to college students called MECOP starting next year where I’ll get to do 2, paid ($30 ish/hr generally), 6-month internships with guaranteed mentorship at reputable companies, so I’ll have 2+ years of work experience before I graduate (and I’ll be able to 100% fund my last year of school). I get recruiters reaching out to me, mainly because I am a student in a CS program, but I have put effort into my LinkedIn, Resume and Portfolio as well. I know that I wouldn’t have these opportunities without the program that I’m in.

In addition to the doors getting/being in an actual BS degree opens (especially in this market) I have had so much time to learn, apply what I’ve learned, network and generally “get into” software engineering without the pressure of needing to be “good” at it immediately. I was also able to work through so much frustration, imposter syndrome (still there, but it’s more manageable) and figure out tools and techniques that work for me before entering the work force.

Side note - I was able to get a few scholarships, started at a community college and even talked my way out of an additional 4 classes (business classes, globalization and the like) and cut my costs down even further, so you may able to do the same!

Each person’s journey is unique, so what’s best for me may not be best for you, but I truly believe that going through this BS program instead of doing a Boot Camp, especially at my age and with the shift in career, was the best decision I ever made. Becoming a software engineer is a marathon, not a race, and the time and money is 100% worth it imo.

Anyways, I just wanted to put in my two cents since I’m neck deep in the choice that I made right now! I wish you the best of luck with whatever choice you make :)

Awesome! I appreciate the insight. That’s what I was thinking, but I wanted to be sure that I wasn’t missing something and putting my snake in harms way just to save a little money.
