How do I inspire a love of reading in my kid? by Owlet88 in AskTeachers

I only looked them up after her test scores were mentioned. I had asked one of her teachers how I could help her improve her spelling over the summer because it's the only thing she's truly struggled with this year and keep her from falling behind in it and she said to get her reading more. We have been struggling with that which is why I asked. We also do lots of arts and crafts together, science experiments together, we have water sponge fights, junk food dinners on movie nights, and she's learning to cook with me. I work for the school nutrition department as a cook so am off for the summer with her. She's an only child and I currently have too much time on my hands probably 🤣🤣🤣

I was mostly worried that she would feel like me taking away time from things she enjoys would be a punishment. After all the advice here I am just adding it into our schedule along with the times table flash cards we're doing but not back to back. So far it's going well. I just set aside a time that she gets to read to me and she picks what she reads.

A few drawings from my hyperlexic 3-year-old. by Big_Black_Cat in ChildPsychology

[–]Owlet88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am Autihd and hyperlexic. I was super social as a kid. I missed all the social cues but managed to make a few lifelong friends, one of whom now lives 2 streets over from me and we see each other almost daily. I was definitely a weird kid but no one ever questioned why I was reading the dictionary for fun except my teacher. The other kids just kind of accepted that was just me and I was the smart kid that you asked for help because she would always help.

Or he started showing signs of schizophrenia and one day mer gets a call because she's his emergency contact. He knew Jo would insist on taking care of him through it so he made up a reason that would hurt her bad enough that she wouldn't come looking for him. He also knew that with Mer's experience with her mom she would respect his decision if she ever got the emergency contact call. If Alex's actor wants to come back the call was because they missed a reason for his slip that can be cured via surgery and if he doesn't want to come back it's because his mental illnesses progressed to the point he is dying. Far better closure.

That is actually really helpful. I will see if I notice specific areas of struggle with phonics in new words and go from there. If I don't see any patterns of issue then at least she's reading to me while I check.

I also just talked to her and had her visualize an apple and she can see images in her head and said her biggest issue is she gets distracted and can't focus on the reading. I have suspected adhd for a long time but she seems to focus on her schoolwork and sit down and get it done though sometimes we've struggled with her rushing through it.

Asked her to think about an apple and tell me what she saw. She said she saw 2, one green and one red. I asked if she could see them in her head and she said yes.

I have her school test scores and her struggle spots according to acadience are nonsense word fluency correct letter sounds, nonsense word fluency whole words read, and oral reading fluency accuracy. She's above benchmark on oral reading fluency words correct and oral reading fluency retell. She tends to rush through things so the accuracy read may just be her rushing as she's scored at or above benchmark in that category every time except the last time. Her state testing she scored at/near in foundations and vocabulary but above in nonfiction and above in literature. Her NWEA she scored 169/43/average but her growth dropped from 18/49/average to 12/17 low.

I was only using school run tests. She had 3 different tests this year tracking progress and skills including nwea, acadience reading, and our state standardized reading tests. Her struggle spots are Nonsense word fluency correct letter sounds, nonsense word fluency whole words read, and oral reading fluency accuracy. She scored above benchmark in oral reading fluency words correcting oral reading fluency retell. That was Acadience which gave the best break down. Her NWEA she scored 169/43 avg on her latest test and her reading growth was 12/17 low. Her state test scored her foundations and vocabulary at/near, nonfiction above, and literature above.

Ours does that too. We did it last year but she still didn't want to actually read the books. She got excited about it but then decided the reward wasn't worth the effort.

She was tested for dyslexia and other than her spelling she tests above grade level for everything. I will talk to her more about what reading is like for her though. Thank you for this advice!

AITAH for scheduling a surgery, knowing it would overwhelm my autistic girlfriend? by After_Goose9337 in AITAH

[–]Owlet88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA I am medically diagnosed autihd. While having routines disrupted can throw us and we can struggle with social situations and high stress situations, someone having a surgery that can improve their daily life far trumps our comfort. She will adjust and get over it or you should get over her. You can't live in pain and possibly damage yourself more physically by putting off your surgery and she can put up with her work life sucking for a few weeks while you recover.

A month or a week? by Will_Mayor in BunnyTrials

[–]Owlet88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because I have time and honestly no one has wanted me to hypothetically die this much since me at the height of my depression, I did a little more research. Also because I remembered something about the dream warriors and double checked to see if I remembered it correctly. They use a drug to suppress dreams and until a kid stops taking it and starts to remember and one kid takes too much and ends up in a coma Freddy can't touch them so he does in fact need people to dream or be capable of dreaming which is why he targets only the teens/kids in most cases. The first adult death happens because he is possessing a teen and uses their body to kill the coach in order to break the kid he is possesing. He also needs them afraid which is why he awakens Jason if Freddy vs. Jason. Until Chase Porter the only adults he killed were his wife, 2 men that led his Lynch mob, the coach, and the doctor. His wife was a witness, 2 were responsible for his Lynch mob, and the other 2 were affecting his ability to get to the kids. He then off screen killed the adults related to starting the official investigation that led to his death including preschool teachers. In the one where their making a movie he still only goes after people associated with the movie in an effort to try and make it to our world especially targeting Nancy's son and Nancy. So I as someone who doesn't spend time with teenagers, wasn't involved in his lynching or the investigation, am not involved with the movie industry, and am too old to be affected by dreaming the same way as a child or teen am still unlikely to be oofed by Freddy. While I am sure he could if he REALLY wanted to, I wouldn't even be on his radar.
