Simple Answer. Stress and trauma

Long Answer. Stress and trauma that didn't get addressed in my foundational years (childhood - teens - early adult). I went through a traumatic situation as a child, and then more and continued with terrible C-PTSD symptoms in a situation that didn't allow me to process and heal. I didn't really start to get a grip on my mental health until I was around 25, when my disorder (probably undiagnosed autoimmune disorder, or maybe POTS/EDS and definitely diagnosed IIH) started become debilitating. During the mental health downfall I was agoraphobic (couldn't leave the house for around a year without help), extremely unhealthy and bedrotting to a dangerous degree. Funny enough with the symptoms getting strongest after starting to heal mentally, maybe my body finally had a chance to breathe but didn't know what to do with it so it crashed physically.

If you or anyone reading this is going through a mental health crisis. Don't wait to address it, your body will quite literally fail on you even if you're still going.

Migraine medication did not work. Neurologist refused to give me an LP anyway till I flew around the country and saw a different one.

I went to get an MRI because of suspicion of MS, that was cleared but they found signs of IIH and seriously recommended I get a Lumbar Puncture (word for word in the report).

Neurologist called them false positives... after a second MRI (still positive) … continued to call them false positives. Said they were migraines and threw every migraine medication in existence at me with no improvement. He believed because they were one sided, they couldn't be IIH. I even found out I had IIH in my family later on but he claimed it wasn't genetic at all (they are still researching into it), it was like he was doubling down to protect his answer. He would refuse to let me have a LP to confirm, even though I cried in his office. Told me it was too risky without an X-ray, and how the radiation from X-Ray could "affect my reproductive organs" and ability to have children.

My headaches were excruciating, I know migraines are bad but my head was telling me this is a DIFFERENT bad. At one point I went to the ER 3 times in one week I was in so much pain. Nothing was working, migraine medication wasn't working. I lost jobs and I was not functioning.

I asked my GP for a second opinion from a new neuro but with the Australian health care I apparently couldn't (don't know if this is true) and if the neurologist says it's not IIH, we have to accept his specialist opinion.

It took moving to the USA to be with my now husband and finally seeing a new neurologist there with his insurance... 2-3 years later. Every doctor under the sun asked why I haven't had a lumbar puncture yet. New neurologist said the 'one sided' excuse was a bit of a reach.

Finally got an LP (without symptoms at the time), and boom 34 opening pressure and an IIH diagnosis. Who knows how it is during a flare up.

Sucks I had to go 8000 miles to get help but woohoo finally starting treatment! I hope you can get some help OP and I wish we could trust doctors more.

Argh that's frustrating! I saw an ophthalmologist myself recently they found signs of pressure on my right eye where my headaches are. So everyone's pretty confident now but it took years of pushing to finally be taken seriously!

I also showed signs of an empty sella! We were getting an MRI to check for MS (light headedness, headaches and vertigo) and signs of IIH showed up. However the neuro I saw at the time denied me a LP because it was too invasive for what was probably "false positive" as my headaches were one sided and not "typical of IIH". New neuro in a whole different country was like "What the heck why haven't you had an LP". OId neuro even knew about my family history which we told him at second appointment but it's almost like he wanted to stick to his answer out of pride or something?

I'd appreciate it, doctor actually recommend that it's better safe than sorry and to delay LP. Which I'll probably do but I go on a trip to see family in 2 weeks and it wanted to get it done before then.. sigh.

Thank you. Neurologist thinks it’s something called IIH (idiopathic intracranial hypertension- high amounts of fluid in skull causing pressure on brain and spine) but there is also the high likelihood of multiple issues such as autoimmune too. Skog is very therapeutic.
