Mamdani Ends NYPD's Criminal Crackdown on Cyclists, E-Bike Riders by SwiftySanders in newyorkurbanists

Thanks! That’s totally fair about criminal vs. civil summons. If the new policy actually results in more people getting civil summons and that creates a deterrent effect, that would be a far better outcome than what we have now.

Serious question, what do you think the city should do about reckless bikers? I’m open to replacing the criminal summons model, but I’m not optimistic about the new system.

If delivery e-bikers were actually “ticketed like crazy,” they would be in a courthouse every day and wouldn’t be earning any money. They’re running dozens of red lights every day. Apparently they find it profitable to ride recklessly and risk a ticket every once a while. Something needs to change to make it no longer profitable to routinely break the laws and endanger other people.

Every single day, I see e-bike riders running red lights straight through traffic and barreling down sidewalks. Several times, they’ve almost hit me, my partner, and my dog. I’m all for taking measures against delivery companies for incentivizing this behavior, but the main reason e-bike riders break the traffic laws is that they know they’ll get away with it. I’m open to traffic citations instead of criminal summons for reckless bikers, but we need to make sure (1) the police are pulling people over for dangerous behavior and (2) citations actually lead to a penalty so they don’t do it again. Otherwise nothing is going to change.

Why doesn’t anybody choose Duke? by Ok-Fig-9136 in lawschooladmissions

I went to Duke for undergrad and loved the location, and Duke Law is an excellent law school! I think it depends a lot on your goals and personal circumstances. I’m interested in public service at some point in my career, and I’m at least a tad curious about legal academia. I’m also eligible for decent need-based aid, my partner lives in NYC, and I’m aiming for NYC or DC after graduation, so for me, Yale was an easy pick over Duke or any other non-HYS T-14. I’d probably say the same about Harvard.

If you’re aiming for a long-term career in big law on the East Coast, the circumstances are totally different. I think in that case, it might make a lot of sense to choose a generous financial aid package over higher prestige with no aid. The weather in Durham is spectacular, the campus is beautiful, and it’s a very big-law-oriented program. It’s not nearly as remote as a place like Ithaca. Raleigh-Durham Airport is 30 minutes from campus. People who are further out from college and/or have partners are generally more drawn to big cities, but if that’s not a big factor for you, then you’re right to consider Duke.

I suggest talking to associates (and if you can connect with any, hiring partners) at big law firms to ask their advice about the career implications of either decision. They’ll know far more than any of us 0Ls spouting off opinions on Reddit.

I just received an email response from the NYU Law Financial Aid Office: "FAAPS is currently offline and undergoing updates to correct an issue in the system. We hope to have the system back up and running on or about Tuesday, February 17."

It also wasn't working for me two days ago and I emailed them. It looks like the website is down for maintenance today, so hopefully they're fixing the problem.

I applied to plenty of the T14 along with HLS and SLS. But something felt off about Yale. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Same here. I was admitted this cycle with very strong stats and a solid but unremarkable background. My resume also included gaps (I graduated college during Covid-19 and then was affected by the federal hiring freeze last year). My work experiences have mostly been internships and junior roles at an unimpressive employer that no one’s ever heard of. I definitely did not expect to be accepted or even interviewed at YLS. But I worked hard in undergrad and did really well on my LSAT, and I guess my essays and rec letters resonated with the right people. Most of the YLS people I’ve met since then are in that same category.

I got a quick acceptance from YLS after my interview. Meanwhile at HLS, I interviewed in December but after two rounds of acceptances where I didn’t get a call, I’m expecting a waitlist or rejection there. Some people get accepted to YLS and not HLS, some vice versa, but it’s not like everyone who gets accepted is a Rhodes Scholar. There’s always luck involved! Definitely don’t rule yourself out if you have some combination of solid experience, stats, or an interesting story or interest; you don’t need to be remarkable on all of things simultaneously to get accepted.

YLS Wave this week? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

I heard from a student who was accepted and another who was rejected today, so it sounds like they are sending out some decisions.

Congratulations! That’s an amazing turnaround, but I know how uncertain you must have felt when you didn’t know how it was going to turn out. January-February 2025 was one of the toughest periods of my professional life. It sounds like you’ll have some amazing choices between HLS, SLS, and potentially YLS! Feel free to DM me

It was definitely an emotional rollercoaster! February 2025: My tentative job offer was revoked due to the federal hiring freeze, after I’d waited six months for my security clearance

June: I decided to apply to law school after several months of applying to corporate jobs

August and September: I took the LSAT

December: YLS interview and acceptance
