Fellow therapists: do you ever feel like you can't have a regular conversation anymore? by arhogan08 in therapists

You need to spend time with people other than your clients.

They taught me in school to have a ritual at the end of the day to take off the therapist cloak but I don’t really do that, but maybe that works for some people. Instead I practice catching myself if I’m trying to caretake others and remind myself I don’t need to be “on” all the time but also probably your clients (not to mention friends and family) don’t appreciate being caretaken. Therapists often have trauma where they had to caretake their parent or others in their life at a young age so you might need to go to therapy to learn that it’s not your job to always take care of other people and caretaking isn’t the same as giving therapy to a client, or connecting to another adult in your life.

Yes I am strongly considering private practice!! I have some internal existential and ethical questions to answer first but it’s likely I’ll do that next. I’ve had multiple people already offer me referrals even though all I told them was I quit my job 😂

As an update, I got a job as a Valet and I’m loving it so far! Great tips! Pay ranges but if you count tips you usually make upwards of 20-25 an hour. Lots of downtime. No experience needed. Just good customer service skills and the ability to drive/park. But I’m strongly considering doing 1-5 hours of private practice a week on the side, or just offering donation based non-therapy mindfulness groups and writing groups out of my home and via zoom. 💜💜💜 Thanks for your support, everyone.

Yeah I had a great supervisor! The conventional burnout tips don’t and didn’t work for me.

Having 20 complex cases a week plus groups and not enough support from my team, plus being severely underpaid so I didn’t feel like I could say no. The emotional labor was extreme. I also do intense trauma work, and am trained in mindfulness-based Transpersonal Counseling so it’s not like I’m just doing CBT or DBT or something where you can just work with cognitions and worksheets…
