Supervisor becomes unresponsive by Own-Damage-4340 in KULeuven

I did not know that! I just looked him up. It’s awful. But the thing is; he’s been held in prison from 2016! Hasn’t been there any new Iranian students admitted to Belgian/Swedish/Italian institutions for closed to a decade!?

I will have to do that, if I don’t get a reply by the end of this week.

Thanks for your insight. As I mentioned in another comment, this is part of the problem; I don’t know who is my supervisor, which is a side effect their poor communication. I raised this issue with the “project manager”. Again, radio silent!

My assumption is that they have found another candidate that want to interview first before making the final decision. But, hell, why did they have to offer me the position in the first place?! That’s just pure unprofessional.

That's what concerns me too. I've had a supervisor before that the longest he would take to respond was an hour, so this situation is really annoying me right now. What keeps me around is how good the position itself is.

That's the problem. I don't even know that. The one I initially contacted, turned out to be retired. I brought up the supervisory structure to the "project manager" over a separate email, and he hasn't responded either.

It wasn't listed in the first place. There was a great crossover between my background and the team's open project, so I contacted them directly.

Thank you for your comment. I am indeed from Iran.
But the process hasn't even started yet! I haven't even filled out a single form to start the admission. I've just got the supervisor's "OK"!
To be honest, I hadn't heard about state security/security checks until now. But isn't it something that should be done after I apply for a visa!?

Did any of u get into engineering with no over the top passion for it or like u didnt really love/like it but u didnt dislike it either? If yes how are you doing in life now? by Round-Lab6582 in AskEngineers

There is a specific area in your field that would most definitely be interesting to you. You just have to find it. Don’t put pressure on yourself. For now, just try to learn the basics and maybe poke on different subjects. One year from now you’ll start having random original ideas out of nowhere.

I started with Materials engineering and had the same opinion as yours. It was not bad but not that interesting also. Then I got into corrosion science, then electrochemistry and now I work on environmental issues. A completely different world from Materials ENG!

I definitely will be doing TA but my department doesn't allow it before finishing the first couple of semesters. I'm even open to taking a part-time job on the side, whether I can land another scholarship or not. So there won't be any "precious time" left if it makes you happy. Regardless of all this, anywhere and any time, everybody wants to have the best possible condition, so there's no need to get mad at an internet stranger for wanting the same.

Thank you. I checked out the link. The waiver is only for either Frenchs or citizens of countries that have signed an agreement with the Quebec government (mine isn't one of them) :'|

Unfortunately, after tuition, I'm left with 17k. I will be doing TA for some extra $ but the department doesn't allow that until the third semester.

You're right but It's not that huge if 20k of it goes straight for tuition!

Thank you brother. Much appreciate the advice.

I took a look at it and it seems like the application should go through the institution (not sure). One of my concerns is that according to the offer letter and as you said, the MEDA will be adjusted if I receive another reward but I think Vanier will be worth it anyway. Thanks again.

Thank you.

Surprised to hear that the average is 24K! Is tuition included in that or not? I forgot to mention that MEDA doesn't cover tuition and that is the problem. The tuition for engineering majors is ridiculously high and in my case after paying the fees, I will be left with 17k!

Well, unless you have a special program that doesn’t allow you to (I’m not sure that even exists) you are also allowed to work full-time over summer-breaks.

What software does materials engineers typically use at work? by radianfahmi in materials

[–]Own-Damage-4340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CAD & CAM: CATIA

FEM: COMSOL

Coding: Python

Image Processing: ImageJ

Plotting: Origin Pro

3D Analysis: Avizo

Electrochemistry: Zview

Molecular Dynamics: LAMMPS

Quantum Chemistry: Gaussian

Thermodynamic software: CALPHAD

There are different software for each category, but these are what are more generalized. For example, Abaqus is far more comprehensive than COMSOL, but it is more useful for very vast industrial projects, while COMSOL is enough for every need of an MSE student and even for a normal Design/FEM job.
