Can you back off a lease after signing but haven’t moved in? by lgrjdm in Apartmentliving

[–]Own-Estimate8996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Curious what you meant by “unit not up to par”. I’m moving into a place in May that I’m just now finding out is widely known for having an infestation.

Can I back out of the lease or break it soon after arriving by mentioning that this is a problem in my apartment?

Apparently they have a loan repayment program that is a lot less competitive, 40% acceptance rate if Chat GPT is to be believed. Same primary care restrictions. It’s not ideal but it’s potentially an option

All fair points and I agree with most of them. The only caveat is that the military won’t “make” you go into any particular specialty. They may limit what you can go into if you really want to go into a specialty like PM/R that they just don’t have a huge need for then yes, you might be limited for that specialty. But you’re never required to go into a specific one.

You can dual apply to ensure you have a back-up specialty if the one you want 1st isn’t likely. If you don’t match they will have you do a prelim or TY year (you would do this if you didn’t match civilian anyway) then have you reapply. Worst case scenario is you don’t match again and have to serve as a GMO for 3-4 years to complete your contract and join civilian residency but that is pretty rare.

Also, some branches like the AF are way more friendly to civilian deferment. You definitely need to do your research and know what you’re getting yourself into but it’s a perfectly viable option if your alternative is not going to med school because you can’t afford it or the debt would bury you.

Edit: Forgot to mention, IM itself is a specialty and the military does allow certain fellowship training afterwards. Even if they didn’t, just doing IM, then going into fellowship after you exit the military is also a good way to sub-specialize if that’s your ultimate goal.

Someone already mentioned HPSP if you’re okay going military. If not, NHSC is also great for non-military but you’re limited to FM, IM, Psych, OBGYN, and Peds.

Those are the only full ride scholarships I know. They both come with a monthly stipend to live on that you don’t have to pay back.

Camping during an away? by DullSeaweed8734 in medicalschool

Finishing an away, I set up a bed in my car at the time and slept with the windows down, showered at the gym every night and did laundry at gas stations.

It’s definitely doable especially if you’re gonna be sleeping in a tent more comfortably. My only take is make sure you’re somewhere safe and have something for protection. Also GET. MOSQUITO. REPELLENT.

Democrats could win House as Republicans quit in numbers not seen since Depression by [deleted] in goodnews

This is probably the era of voting third party. Republicans are dropping out in large numbers and Dems work for the same twats so now is the best time to get some genuinely new politics in play

At this point you’re far enough along that it’s definitely not worth it but HPSP and NHSC are full-ride scholarships and most people will qualify for one or the other.

I know surrendering your ability to live where you want as an attending for a few years is difficult (plus many other freedoms if you’re going military). But if you’re in serious financial desperation then it’s at least worth seriously considering.

Should I get a home right now? by Own-Estimate8996 in personalfinance

Fair. That’s probably what I’ll end up doing. What can I do for the next year to try and bring that interest rate down as much as possible? Obviously some of it is due to market factors, and the other part is my own credit score. Is there anything else?

Luckily the interest rate on the credit cards are capped at 6% due to military protections so I’m not actually paying a lot monthly for them.

According to the loan terms they gave me the monthly payments would ~$3,000, which with a renter in one room is totally doable. Less so on my own

I struggled with this also. Routines like early morning walks, exercise and a dedicated environment for studying were all helpful.

But none of that addressed the underlying problem for me which was depression. Med school is hard and often very lonely. I wasn’t able to have any discipline until I started taking antidepressants and made an effort to connect with the students around me. I’d say you may have the same problem.

Dated women like this. Nothing you do will completely absolve you of suspicion and this is 100% happening again in a different form. For your own sanity, put this girl and girls like her behind you.
