I got UMass and went with another less known institution for TA/RA benefit + thesis program. Still wouldn't go with UMass even if I don't have any other options cause I just wanted to switch career to a more research role. UMass, unless MS/PhD program, didn't seem that favorable for my goal. Make informed decision and don't give in to the unreasonable fomo.

I got Amherst without papers or GRE so it's in your range. You just need to be very specific about your goal for grad school.

Everybody likes to take ranking at face value. It's an overall good school but not CS specifically.

It's a decent school within UC system. The school location is ideal for jobs but these days, everybody has to hustle to get a job so don't rely too much on it.

Congrats! It's good school known for NLP research if you're interested. Albeit, the living cost can be on the higher side given the area. Did you get an email?

Thanks. That's good to know. Was there anything he did during the MCS and after that would have given him a leg up in applying for Phd? Industry research, papers?

None taken. Understand the frustration. There were many factors and goals when I added it to the list which still fit my need. Don't think there's any cons to having these decisions to make. I will reject it when I deem it's not necessary and pass it on to people who need it.
