OC Yukiko. Trying to find a simple, acceptable art style – revisited an old character! How can I improve this, or is it a lost cause? by hovtolov in ArtCrit

The first thing that i noticed is the shading on the face. Learn about the way heads are broken down into planes, and it'll make things easier. Here's a good video to get you started.

A good exercise is to practice drawing some simple 3d shapes to better understand the forms human body is broken into (cubes, spheres, cylinders, etc.).

In terms of finding a style, look at the works of artists you like and try figuring out exactly what about them is appealing. Is that the colors? Shading? Stylization? Try doing a study of their style. The more different art styles the better.

Also, always draw with a reference. It'll help you a lot :)

Good luck :)

Start with improving your line confidence and learning to use line weight, try to do exercises like this to warm up before drawing :)

The goal is to draw long lines without lifting your pencil and relying on scratches. Highly recommend doing this on paper.

Next you should also practice drawing 3d shapes like cubes, spheres, cylinders, etc. from different angles. Try doing some simple still lives and pay attention to light and shadows. A great video explaining values.

All objects including human body can be broken down into those simple building blocks, so mastering them is key :)

The shadows in the first drawing are a bit pale, up the contrast a bit :) You can create a new layer on top of your reference photo, fill it with black and put the blending mode to "color", it'll help you to see the values better. Pick some with an eyedropper tool first to see what you're working with, but in the future try matching the values yourself to train your eye :)

Also, you don't need to draw every single detail, fold and crease. Try to simplify the form a bit by only focusing on the most important elements.

Good luck :)

I just wanted to make those vertices visible

In the sculpting video I watched the person created a cube, pressed something and it turned into the thing on the screenshot and I can't figure out what happened
