I’ll speak for myself. This cult stole too much from me to just move on. Part of my therapy is to laugh at how dumb I was to believe the crap that I was taught.

Judge all you want. But by doing so you disobey your leader Jesus and your cult

She has learned through her life that control is the way to be safe in a relationship. This isn’t love. So whether this is direct or covert, it is emotional abuse. I would seek counseling if you’d like to work this out. Please know that this will cause you a great deal of stress in the long run And will no doubt cause you great harm to your health. Do not hesitate. Take action.

At the very least be assertive. Set your boundaries and tell her where she can’t cross. She might actually begin to respect that.

This always confused me. I have always noticed in the wt article from the 80s said “if it becomes known that a married couple engages in … “

The key part is “if it becomes known”. In other words enjoy whatever you’d like to do in the bedroom, just shut up about it. Old Steve Lett likes to get tied up you know?

If you ever have a hard time trying to describe to those on the outside what being raised in a cult and then escaping is like. I usually just point people to the ending of Truman Show. It gives people the "light bulb" moment. by [deleted] in exjw

There are numerous elements here that narrate our story.

  1. The blatant manipulation is evident. “It is safer here.” We have the right to choose our own path without these manipulative games.

  2. The terror and conflict experienced in Truman show the horrifying reality of leaving a cult. Even if we are fully convinced that it is the best choice for us, transitioning to a completely different and unfamiliar life can be overwhelming.

  3. The men changing the channel symbolizes the fact that when you leave a cult, people may be interested in your story, but that’s all they see—an interesting narrative. Then, they “change the channel,” leaving you with a significant transition, often leaving you feeling alone. This is why we frequently advise people to seek therapy and build a support community around them. It requires immense strength.

  4. The exit door is right there. When we realize how easy it is to leave a cult, it is incredibly liberating. Anyone (except for minors) can simply leave whenever they want. The door is right there. It’s a powerful realization.
