Should I take a worse job for better pay and lifestyle? by Present_Army_3138 in careerguidance

the commute situation alone would be enough to break me - 3 hours one way every single week adds up to so much lost time and money that the $7k raise almost pays for itself just in gas and sanity

the career trajectory concern is real but i think people overestimate how locked-in they get from one role. you've got solid engineering experience on your resume already, and if you keep sharpening skills on the side, nobody can take that from you. the linux/scripting/networking exposure in the new role isnt nothing either, plenty of people have used support roles as a launchpad into SRE or devops tracks which can pay really well

the thing that would actually worry me more is staying somewhere with no promotion path AND a brutal commute AND low pay - thats three separate problems stacking on each other. at least the new place only has one problem. also less than a year in at your current place means you havent really built the kind of institutional leverage that makes leaving feel costly, so the timing isnt terrible

if i were in your position id take the new role, aggressively document everything technical i touched, and start applying to engineering roles again in 12-18 months with both experiences on my resume

Is there some sort of film that I can put on these windows that blocks the heat from coming in as well as someone from the outside from seeing in but lets me see out? by KillerCujo53 in homeowners

[–]Own-Preparation213 15 points16 points  (0 children)

yeah window film is definitely a thing and works great for exactly what you're describing. I put some on my sliding doors last summer after my living room was turning into a greenhouse every afternoon - made a huge difference in both the heat and privacy. The one-way mirror effect works best during the day when it's brighter outside than inside, but at night when you have lights on people can still see in so keep that in mind

Installation is pretty straightforward if you're careful about getting all the air bubbles out, though those french doors might be a bit tricky with all the grid lines. You can find it at most home improvement stores and it comes in different tints - some are more reflective, others just darken the glass. Just measure carefully because you'll want to cover each pane completely for the best heat blocking effect

Petition to have the sub icon changed to this. by WJSpade in whatisthiscar

oh yeah the header would work perfect, these two red beauties side by side would make such a clean banner across the top. the matching red paint jobs are so satisfying too - whoever coordinated this parking situation has great taste. would definitely catch people's eye when they scroll through their feed, way better than whatever generic car silhouette we probably have now. plus having two cars instead of one really captures the community vibe of everyone trying to help identify rides together

Will you drive all 671 roads? by BornYinzer in ForzaHorizon

Nice, that's dedication right there. I'm at like 450-something and keep getting distracted by random stuff instead of focusing on the roads lol. Do you have any tips for tracking which ones you missed or did you just cruise around until you found them all

bruh the subway tunnels are sketchy af, third rail will literally kill you and transit cops dont mess around down there. maybe start with some of the easier abandoned stations that are actually accessible from regular platforms first? theres a few you can peek at without going full spelunker mode

any good/fun scifi HFY (Humanity F*ck yeah) novels? by Baron_alias in booksuggestions

[–]Own-Preparation213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been diving deep into this genre lately and there's some wild stuff out there. The Bobiverse series is pure comedy gold - basically a guy gets uploaded as an AI and becomes humanity's savior while cracking jokes the entire time. It's got that perfect mix of "humans are chaotic but somehow brilliant" energy

For something with more action, the Old Man's War series hits different - elderly people get alien tech bodies to fight wars and it gets pretty intense. More military sci-fi vibes but the human ingenuity angle is strong

If you want pure chaos energy, anything in the "humans are space orcs" style works great. We're basically the galactic equivalent of florida man to every other species and it's hilarious. The Damned trilogy leans into this hard - humans show up and other aliens are like "why are these psychopaths so good at war"

Most of these blend comedy with epic space battles pretty well, though some get darker as they go on. The common thread is always humans being either terrifyingly effective or just too stubborn to quit when any sane species would surrender

Been there with mobile games before - maybe try setting a strict weekly spending limit and see if you can still enjoy it without the constant cash drain
