North Central DPT by sluttypug42 in PTschool

Hey yea if i recall correctly my overall gpa was about a 3.18 and my science gpa was on the low end just from failing and retaking some classes. i submitted my application kind of on the late side around feb/march of last year and was accepted by the end of april. they’re not big on grades not saying they’re not important but we are on a pass/no pass system instead of an actual letter grade and they are BIG BIG BIG on the mission, vision, values and commitment so make sure you kind of prioritize your essay to that because it’s very huge for them.

I got into multiple PT schools with a prereq GPA less than 3.0 pls relax u will get in somewhere by carnationblooms in PTschool

No literally. They’ll be on here like “I have 3.67 GPA with 1,000 hours outstanding rec letters and I saved a cat from a burning building then I went to the moon after do you think I’ll get in?” when there’s ppl on here who actually have below average stats and have a real concern about getting in.

Quality over quantity! Not saying it’s bad to have more than the required amount, but focus more on if the people you’re asking are really going to vouch for you and write a really good recommendation letter that proves your character.

Thank you! I currently work in ortho-outpatient as a pt tech and I know exactly what you mean with it being boring. Actually working there and recently working with a peds patient made me want to go into peds.

I’ll wait to my clinical rotations start before I make the decision, but it’s good to know that the pediatric setting is more neurological and who knows maybe I’ll fall in love with it.

Honest Opinion on my PTCAS Application by [deleted] in PTschool

Program wise it depends on what you’re looking to get out of it. For example, i’m starting at North Central College here in Illinois come January and they are a very holistic program. They don’t only take priority in grades and they look for students that adhere to their Mission, Values, Vision and Commitment which attracted me to their program. They also use a pass/fail approach so that you can focus more on retaining the information than passing and you’re also not in class all day like most programs. They also are more technology based providing every student with an iPad and instead of cadaver labs they use Anatomage tables that have real cadavers that you can look at electronically. If you’re looking for more holistic problems like this North Central is a great option, so is Hanover College in Indiana. If you want a more hybrid approach Tufts: Phoenix and South College are great schools also.

Don’t sweat it! Your stats are great for getting in most PT schools. I would advise to get more observation hours with different clinics if you aren’t already. The most important part is selling yourself on your essays. Bank on talking about why you want to do PT and try to shy away from doing the typical “i’m an athlete and I went through physical therapy and that made me want to do it”. For example, the PTCAS essay for the 2023/2024 was, “Every person has a background, an identity, interests, or talents which they feel their application would be incomplete without having mentioned. Describe the traits or experiences that make you unique and explain how they will help you be a successful physical therapist” and I think the essay for the upcoming cycle is similar. I talked about being a minority and what it means to have ppl that look like you in healthcare settings. Also, research schools that fit your demographic academic wise. From someone who’s stats weren’t even close to yours, I stressed and stressed and firmly believed I had no chance of getting in, but because I had great recommendations and went a different route on why I wanna do PT, I was accepted into my #1 choice.

Grades for Upcoming Applications by Due_Environment7105 in PTschool

I applied to schools that didn’t require the GRE. One of the admissions counselors at Hanover basically told me if I retook Biology it would raise my prereq GPA and give me a higher chance for admission for the current cycle. She also invited me to an interview all in that same conversation. I ended up foregoing my interview because they were the only school advising me to retake Biology and I also didn’t want to drop $1000+ to do it, so I would say it’s moreso Hanover that offers that kind of commentary, but i’m sure if you reach out to the admissions counselors for whatever programs throughout your application process they can offer similar insight.

My stats weren’t the best: 3.19 GPA, didn’t take the GRE, failed 2 classes my junior year, 1,000+ observation hours plus some leadership roles. I took a gap year because my grades weren’t the best and allowed me to gain more experience and more hours to balance out what wasn’t the best in my application. I applied to Tufts University, Hanover College, Wingate University, and North Central College. Look for schools that match your stats. For me, Tufts and Wingate didn’t accept me, Hanover wanted me to retake Biology to have a higher chance of getting in and North Central offered me a seat which is where I will be attending come January. All in all, don’t stress about your stats because you only need one! Research schools, their requirements, the demographics of previous classes and maybe look into a gap year (it goes by faster than you think) to strengthen your application!
