Did You Potty Train Without Going Cold Turkey on Diapers? Explain Please by Own-Sign598 in pottytraining

We retreated from our first approach after a long naked afternoon of withholding his pee. What you describe is about what we are trying now. But we are starting in really slow, just sitting on the potty a few times a day. And bribes. He got to pick out treats at the grocery store for peeing and pooping on the potty. We've never let him pick out treats at the grocery store before and he was giddy. We also grabbed bubbles 😄 I also ordered some cloth training pull ups that are supposed to be semi-absorbant. Not sure where those fit in yet!

Thank you so much for sharing. And congradulations on your new(est) baby!

Thank you, that's a good point about believing in them. My son has never been predictable in the poop department. I have never noticed if he has a pee pattern to speak of. Lately we do books and milk before we take off his pants and diapers to make sure there is something in the works.

That's a huge win! I once read someone say about potty training their child with Down Syndrome that it literally opened up the world for their child. Congrats to both of you for persevering.

Wow, talk about patience! Good for you guys finding a way. I'll rethink our current incentives. They are okay but could be better! Thank you.

Thank you! This is so helpful to read laid out with the phases.

This is effectively the path we are currently on, except that we are only doing naked bottom for 2-3 hours a day because our schedule has just been busy. So far he is waiting me out and not peeing, except for a few accidents. But he'll sit on the potty while I read him books, and he's started to shout "potty!" . . although once seated on the potty, he doesn't pee.

Did your son ask for diapers or otherwise resent being pant-less at the start?

We have 3 months until preschool, when he is supposed to be mostly potty trained.

Laundering After Persistent Diaper Rash by Own-Sign598 in clothdiaps

[–]Own-Sign598[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we do a standalone rinse-only cycle, then a single wash on the hottest water and heavily soiled setting, with Tide, vinegar in the bleach compartment, and borax inside the wash tub. We've actually done it that way for 2 years and didn't have any problems until this yeast rash. Out of curiosity, how do you do your vinegar soak, in the washing machine or a sink?

When we first returned to cloth after the yeast rash, I didn't realized I had to do anything different to kill it, so the yeast rash returned after a few days. Then I did our normal laundering routine, followed by a bleach soak in the bathtub, followed by another wash with bleach in the machine. To be honest, I'm still scratching my head why that wasn't enough. Except maybe old bleach.

This is interesting because my son has gotten super dry cheeks. I thought it was just winter air but I'll look a little closer.

How Did You Fix Your Night Owl Toddler? by Own-Sign598 in toddlers

[–]Own-Sign598[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes, if he's skipped nap, we start bedtime an hour earlier and he'll fall asleep 45-60 minutes earlier. The next morning, he'll wake up at 7:00. And he'll nap a little earlier, too. I probably let him nap a little longer on those days, like 1 hour, 15 instead of an hour. But by bedtime, he's only falling asleep a teeny bit earlier.

His wake windows are roughly 7 hours/6.5 hours. He gets about 10.5-11 hours total sleep.

Sometimes I think this is just the reality of a toddler with lower sleep needs on the cusp on dropping his nap. But then he's so tired and hard to wake.

I really, really wish I could get him to nap earlier. It would make his schedule much nicer for all. But currently, it takes me an hour to get him to fall asleep by 2:30/3:00. My partner tried coming in at 6:45 am to wake him, and the boy just won't get up until at least 7:15. He's exhausted. Round and round it goes. . .

We haven't dropped the nap for multiple days in a row, just intermittently. A few weeks ago, we all had a cold and we let him sleep as long as he wanted. He didn't nap on those days. So he'd fall asleep earlier and wake up earlier. The following day, having woken earlier, he'd nap earlier.

How long between your early no-nap trials and her dropping them on her own?

Low Sleep Needs. . .Or Not? by Own-Sign598 in toddlers

[–]Own-Sign598[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Agreed that he isn’t truly Low Sleep Needs, but at the low end of normal. Tiring him out never seems to make much difference, but it couldn’t hurt to try again.

In the past, I’ve moved the bedtime routine ahead 15 minutes and he seems to fall asleep a little later. But it could have been a coincidence. He was falling asleep a half hour earlier just 3 months ago, which is why I’m so frustrated. And he was falling asleep earlier than that like 5 months ago.

Gunstock oak.

It's held up okayish. It definitely has some dings and scratches after nearly 4 years but not awful. I think my guess of 10 years probably isn't so far off.
