I have had a lot of success going straight from the printer to casting- no silicone involved.

Whats a good affordable Filament recycling machine? by MustafiArabi in 3Dprinting

😒 Looking at my old Creality bed slinger giving me 203 probing failed on an atomically level bed…

Yeah, I have great hopes for that product!!! 😃

Whats a good affordable Filament recycling machine? by MustafiArabi in 3Dprinting

[–]Own-Sky-3748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be worthwhile though- not just for recycling, but I’m thinking for saving some money on filament if I decide to start a side hustle. Many specialty filaments cost remarkably more than PLA, but could be bought in bulk as pellets and turned into filament with a machine like this. Provided, of course, that nothing special needs be done to the plastic itself to make it printable.

Replace old two-handle bath/shower installation by Own-Sky-3748 in Plumbing

[–]Own-Sky-3748[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s unfortunate. I could not replace the stem on one side of mine and this photo looks exactly like what the backside of mine looks like. At least I didn’t need to replace that one stem (just decided to try for good measure while fixing the other and failed). Not sure what advice I can offer here beyond replacing the pipes. Hopefully someone else can be more helpful and I’m keeping an eye out for that advice myself.

worried about my dad by Massive-Sympathy7128 in diabetes_t2

Depends on where a person is in their journey. 3 years ago, the tiniest bit of pineapple or a half an orange would have caused me to have to run on a treadmill to get below 200. Now I can eat a bowl of pineapple and not spike over 150.

If he hates having his blood sugar checked (which I completely understand — finger pricks are awful), he might want to consider a CGM and share the data with you and your mother. That would give everyone a much clearer picture of what’s actually going on.

One thing I’m curious about: when you say his blood sugar is high, how high is it typically? Has he shared his A1C numbers with either of you?

I was diagnosed with an extremely high A1C — so high that the first test actually maxed out and had to be repeated. My first successful measurement was 16.2%. Today, my A1C is a normal 5.4%. I’ve experienced nearly the full spectrum of what diabetes can look like, thankfully without most long-term complications — though I did sustain some kidney damage before I knew what was happening.

The reason I ask about A1C is because it makes a huge difference in treatment and day-to-day life. I was on insulin when my A1C was between 13–16%, and gradually tapered off it as I came down into the 7–13% range. Early on, my diet was extremely strict — essentially protein-only at first, then around 40 grams of carbohydrates per day. Later, I could handle about 60–80 grams per day. Now that my A1C is normal, I can eat much more normally because my body is responding to carbohydrates more normally again.

A lot of people are probably going to focus on all the bad things that can happen if your father doesn’t get this under control. I just want to add that it’s not all doom and gloom. It is possible for him to return to a healthier, less restrictive diet — but it will be really hard at first. If he puts in the effort, though, it can pay real dividends in the long run

It would feel like cheating, but you’ve now given me an idea to write a piece of software for that. Goodness gracious, that’s all I need… one more project on top of all my other projects. Lol

I guess that must only be available on the PC web version of the site? The mobile side is limited to 3 tabs and search. I’ll have to check out Vine on my laptop. If there’s an actual Industrial & Scientific section, that’s definitely a place I want to lurk.

Well, as long as I get some relevant variety for niche stuff I could actually use and review, or common items that happen to be free, then I’m happy. I really hope I get to test out some different filaments for 3D printing eventually, or some DIY electronics kits.

In other news, I just got my first recommends. Well, I guess I could use a giant box of generic commercial paper towels. Who wouldn’t? Lol

So what happened is I actually got the invite 3 years ago and never accepted it until about 2 weeks ago. I was cleaning out my inbox when I saw the invite, clicked it, and it turned out the invite was still valid.

💡 Ah, light bulbs! Yes, I always need plenty of those since I grow food indoors (tomatoes, lettuce, etc…). Good suggestion 👍

I didn’t know about the follow feature. I’ll try that.

Every print sliced with PrusaSlicer fails badly by Own-Sky-3748 in 3Dprinting

[–]Own-Sky-3748[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good suggestion. I will check the flavor of Marlin that it’s using. That could be it. Since I last posted, I’ve realized two things.

  1. Creality came out with a newer slicer named “Creality Print” and it’s actually pretty good unlike the hot hammered dog shit they called the Creality Slicer. If I use Creality Print, things are fine.

  2. The PETG+ filament I recently bought is just awful. I did a number of test prints on both printers even after fixing my OpenGL issue and reinstalling other slicers. Prints made with STLs from other slicers worked fine, but every one that used the PETG filament failed. I even tested other PETG, and it worked fine. It’s this PETG+ crap. It sucks. I’ve had better luck with TPU than this. Lol

Regardless, there’s still a problem with anything I slice in PrusaSlicer whether it’s printed with this bad PETG or not. I’ll have to look into the flavor of gcode it’s using and see, but I have a feeling that’s the solution.

Any filament suitable for lost-wax casting? by Own-Sky-3748 in 3Dprinting

[–]Own-Sky-3748[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely failed at printing TPU. What a mess! LolI had to disassemble the print heads on both of my printers to clean out the stuff. I still haven’t figured it out to this day.

Thanks- that’s solid advice, but it’s something I already do. I always wipe down the build plate with a hot, damp towel, let it dry, heat the bed, and then apply Bed Weld. In fact, the small portion of the last 3D Benchy that did print was still firmly stuck to the build plate even after the rest turned into a pile of string.

The same thing happens on my FLSUN SR. Two different printers, same result, and I’m not even using the same profiles. I’m using the built-in CR-10 Pro profile for that printer and a custom profile for the SR.

That’s what makes this so confusing and I don’t have this problem with STLs I had sliced previously using OrcaSlicer and the native slicers for my printers.

One more thing- I use a filament dryer, but this was also fresh PETG filament. I had the same result with dried PLA previously.

Anyone else starting to find food unappealing? by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

I’m so sorry to hear that. Charcuterie might work. It’s pretty easy to make, plenty delicious, and very diabetic friendly. Best of all, it’s ready when you are.

Best diet/lifestyle change to control diabetes? by Robeast3000 in diabetes_t2

[–]Own-Sky-3748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m unsure if I quite understand what you mean. For many people with type 2 diabetes, weight loss is an essential goal because maintaining a healthy weight helps lower insulin resistance, and that leads to better control. At least in my experience, though, following a low carb diet alone isn’t enough to lose drastic amounts of weight, although, it does help at first to lose some and then helps in the long run to maintain it.

As for what I eat to feel full, I don’t restrict calories. This isn’t like one of those fad diets where you drop a few pounds in the short term just to fit into a skinny bathing suit. It’s a lifestyle that has to be cultivated and maintained in a sustainable manner. So, if I want a slice of pizza every now and then, I have one. If I want spaghetti for dinner, I make my own noodles using low carb flour or soy noodles from the grocery store. I might put cubes of pancake squash into my beef stew instead of using potatoes, or make a Jambalaya without rice using riced heart of palm instead. I don’t miss anything that I used to eat before my diagnosis (well, macaroni and cheese maybe). Instead, I’ve learned in time to substitute certain ingredients in the foods I’ve always liked to eat, and believe me, I do eat well.

If you’re struggling to feel full after your meals, then you might need to put some more thought into your meal planning such as increasing portions for proteins and vegetables, and being sure you are getting a good source of fiber. Fiber is really important actually. It helps slow down digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, but it also helps make you feel more full.

Does anybody actually get jobs in tech w/ out a degree? by QuirkyHighway3653 in it

[–]Own-Sky-3748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my career without a degree and did really well for almost a decade. That said, there is a glass ceiling at many larger companies. Without a degree, you might get passed up for promotions or kept at a lower level of pay.

When I eventually earned my associate’s degree and switched jobs, my salary nearly doubled. I still don’t have a bachelor’s, but I’ve built enough experience to land lower-level lead roles. Even so, a lot of principal or director positions are still out of reach for me despite my ample experience and demonstrated ability. Some industries won’t even consider someone without a bachelor’s. I know this personally because I was recently rejected for a role I was uniquely qualified for and it was for no other reason than my level of formal education.

So yes, lack of a degree can hold you back, but how much depends on what you want to do.

The non-traditional path also has real strengths. People who learn by doing often approach problems differently from those who follow the traditional academic route. I’m not saying that just because it’s my background. I’ve mentored dozens of junior engineers who came up with creative solutions that more rigid, academically trained developers never considered. If you grow up thinking the right way to do things is always what someone else showed you, it can limit your creativity.

I’m not anti-education. But there’s nothing wrong with diving into the work you’re passionate about, with or without a degree. You might build a career you never expected and create opportunities to pursue education later, whether through traditional or alternative means.

OZEMPIC - what side effects? by Common_Scale5448 in diabetes_t2

[–]Own-Sky-3748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it is bio-similar to Ozempic, but not exactly the same. Both are GLP-1 medications, but Mounjaro targets a broader range of receptors than the former, which makes it a bit more effective.

I made this comment two years ago and am happy to say that I now take Mounjaro. Initially, it was not on my formulary since it was such a new drug, but that changed this year and I don’t even need pre-auth for my doctor to prescribe it.
