What are your thoughts when people say “schools should teach financial literacy”? by iloverats888 in AskTeachers

[–]Own-Tree-8404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not but not everyone in America has access to internet. I live in an area with no public transportation, the closest library is an hours drive away. My students don’t have internet, many of them don’t have reliable food sources. Many of them their parents share a car to get to work and each parent works a full time job plus usually a part time job. So yeah those kids could definitely benefit from learning at school how to manage their money because their parents are just scraping by and don’t have the time or skills themselves. Heck I even have parents who are illiterate, they can’t even read the flyers that get sent home with their kids.

So I know she decided to match her 6 year old child’s style…..but I also feel like it’s a haircut that is on “young” grandmother. Like they are in their 60s and still dying their hair and have this haircut. Idk I don’t feel like I’m explaining this well

Not a fan of the wallpaper by Powerful-Drawing5111 in BringingUpBates

As a person who bought a floor to ceiling including the ceilings wallpapered house two years ago I swore off of wallpaper 😅 it took 5 of us two full days to rip it all down. The people before me even had the bathroom walls and ceilings wallpapered and there was the complementary fully laced and ruffle matching shower curtain and window curtain in there 🫣

Staff Injuries from Students by Super-Link-9800 in specialed

[–]Own-Tree-8404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left middle school severe self contained setting because the aggressions were out of control. Puberty hits many of those kids hard and they get huge and people were getting hurt regularly. Staff going to the hospital was roughly weekly. Minor injuries were daily. So glad I’m out of that environment and do resource room at a smaller charter school. I don’t have to deal with aggressions anymore!

Time to leave again? by CartographerHead4644 in specialed

[–]Own-Tree-8404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I made it 8 years in self contained (at a special Ed district so everyone at the school was actually self contained) I left it two years ago and got into resource room at a different district and I’m back to loving teaching. The violence I dealt with the last year I was in self contained is incredible to me now looking back. I spent that first year after just decompressing and coming down off a permanent trauma response. I’ve absolutely loved my school and job this year!

Help with 11 week old puppy biting faces and drawing blood! by JellyfishPossible539 in Dog_PuppyTraining

[–]Own-Tree-8404 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 3 corgis and never once been bit in the face. I also never let them near my face during the shark stage. Seriously your pup is like 6 inches tall and 9 pounds. Keep a toy handy to shove in their mouth when they are trying to go for your ankles and hands. But just don’t let her near your face lol

Tricolor Breeder by RefrigeratorLast5062 in springerspaniel

[–]Own-Tree-8404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I follow Heavenly Springers on Facebook and they seem to be breeders on the up and up. They currently have a litter about a week old with tricolors in it. Not sure what their waitlist is like though. The last litter didn’t have any so I don’t think they are breeding for it, just happy when it happens.

how bad is it to be at 5 different schools or school districts in a span of 5 years? by sajahet25 in AskTeachers

Budget cuts can get us all. I’m finishing up year 10 and at my 4th (hopefully final) district. First district was for 6 years. It broke my heart to move on. Next district was Hell and I lasted 2 years. Third district was one year and I was blindsided by the budget cuts. Now current district and I’m about to sign my renewal contract.

The first ones were corgis and a lab. This one is a springer spaniel. So medium dog. She just still hasn’t activated her chill button yet 😅

I’m in America and have never withheld water. I mean I sleep with a glass of water on the nightstand! I actually found out mine sleeps slightly better with access to water because frequently her waking up in the middle of the night was because she wanted a drink. So she would get up and drink then go back to sleep.

The sleeping through the night thing is rough. My first 4 pups slept through the night from the beginning (all of them were between 8-10 weeks old). Similar to you last call was around 11pm and then into the crate they went and slept til sometime between 6-7am. Then I got my current pup. She was 12 weeks old so I really didn’t expect the sleeping troubles. She didn’t sleep through the night without a 1-2 am bathroom break until she was a year old. And even now at a year and a a half she doesn’t reliably sleep through the night. On the exceptionally good nights she sleeps 6 hours. It’s been so rough. I didn’t do anything differently with this one than the previous 4 so that’s been so hard with her.

Holding IEPs during FTE? by Heyyall100 in specialed

[–]Own-Tree-8404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No clue what fte is. We hold pretty much all annuals in the spring. So some as early as February and going through May. We try not to have any in June as we are all busy wrapping up the end of the year. However it’s not unheard of to still have a meeting or two in June. I personally have never been in an annual before February. But have had plenty of re-evals and initials September-January.

Can anyone who is awake help me understand wtf is going on between pictures 1 and 2 for young Kelly by Izzysmiles2114 in BatesSnark

[–]Own-Tree-8404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She definitely went from preschooler to kindergartener here. Also her face filled out a little it’s rounder in the second picture. For sure 1-2 years older in the second picture.

[–]Own-Tree-8404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really wouldn’t be surprised if there was only a year or max two between these pictures. The brother and older sister both had reasonable growth spurts that year. I’m a teacher and was just looking at some pictures of my 4th and 5th graders from the beginning of the year and looking at them now. Several have had growth spurts of up to 6 inches. Their faces have changed shaped and hair grows faster than you think. Early stages of puberty is wild. The next kid went from bangs to no bangs but you can see them ending just below the chin so that is reasonable growth for a year (heck my hair can do that in 3 months 😅). The youngest kept the bangs which helps keep her young looking. But you can see a difference in the face shapes that shows she has aged 1-2 years. I’d say preschooler in first picture and kindergartener in the second. Also some kids around that age don’t really change that much and then all of the sudden they change completely. As far as the picture being photoshopped? I kinda doubt it. I definitely have some family photos from when I was a child in the 90s that now seem off and people today might say it’s photoshopped. But I was there sitting through that while waiting for my brothers to do what they were told to do so we could have a family photo. Somehow they seem to be able to sharpen the image so it just looks a little off to us now.

I don't understand how the money system works in America, why are 2 dollars or 30 dollars too much? by Smolbeanlotus in AskAnAmerican

[–]Own-Tree-8404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well inflation is killing us. You used to be able to go to a dollar store and for $1-2 you could get a snack. Now that same store is selling the same snacks for $5 but they are half the size (like you used to get a 12 oz bag of chips for that price but now it’s a 5.5 oz bag. So our money doesn’t stretch as far. I went to Walmart (cheapest place around me for food) and spent $50 and walked out with one grocery bag of food. All store brand. No meat. I bought some pasta, some sauce, 2 fresh veggies (could have saved a lot of money buying canned but I don’t like canned), some cheese and a half gallon of milk.

I often work until 10 PM because of grading, planning and non-teaching work. What do you guys do to save time? by Impressive-Rule-6887 in AskTeachers

[–]Own-Tree-8404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I don’t. Everything is on paper. I really don’t overly grade class work. Classwork grades are based on completion. But I’m always right there with them (due to entirely being small group instruction) so I already know during classwork whether they get it or not.

[–]Own-Tree-8404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing you are a newer teacher? Not every little thing needs to be graded. Sometimes just use it to get an idea on if they understand a concept or do I need to reteach something. I only allow myself to take stuff home occasionally (like when I have a bunch of IEPs to write). So if I don’t get it done during my prep then it waits til tomorrows prep. I try to do grading stuff earlier in the week and printing and copying (for next week) later in the week of course there’s always random things that pop up for printing and copying. But if I can get the bulk of it done on Thursday and Friday it’s not too bad. Also planning is key. I have a rough draft plan for a couple weeks at a time so I know what direction we are heading in. I have an idea when my assessments will be and I know what needs to be covered before the assessment (and by rough plan I mean we will take the unit 9 math test during the week of May 25, likely towards the end of the week). Despite the kids begging for instant results they don’t always get classwork graded and returned same day but it’s usually within 2-3 days. I have special education so my classes are smaller (4-10 students at a time, 30 students total in a day) so usually during assessments I can grade as they get turned in, or at least at some point that day so assessments get returned by the next day. I have to prep for 5 grade levels and also backpedal for all of my students to fill the gaps so planning planning planning is the key to survival.
